along with a new psu and had a few questions. its been years since i researched a gpu and never had one this advanced so sorry if i sound stupid.

there are power cables each with 2 power connectors giving me 4 total...do all 4 of these need to be plugged into the psu?

what is Afterburner and is it something i should install? it looks like an overclocking software and its not something i am familiar with.
if it makes a big difference, then i will learn how to use it....but i just want to know what it is and if its even worth messing with

sidenote: this card is badass. my W7 index went from 4.6 to 7.8

those are adapters for if the power supply doesn't have 1 or 2 6-pin pci-e cables.

it is overclocking software and you could use it but it's not going to make a huge difference, and the card is so fast you shouldn't need it for anything but trying to max like bf3.

and what is the power supply? a cheap one isn't smart, overloading it could make it blow and take something else with it.

Dont know what you really mean. Most newer power supplies will have a 4/8 pin CPU power connector. Plus have from one to four PCIe 6/8 pin power connectors. Your card need to have two PCIe 6 pin power connectors plugged into it. If your power supply doesnt and your talking about the adaptors that come with it, yes you need to have both molex power plugged into each adaptor. What power supply do you have?

and it does have those connectors that u mentioned. see, im a moron

im off to open this thing up again...oops

Yes, it has four PCIe 6 pin power connectors. No need to use the adaptors that came with the card.

Use two of these from the power supply for the card.

I said there was no need to use the adaptors because the power supply already has PCIe connectors.

ok live and learn right....what an idiot i am. opened it back up and connected it correctly

it was easy to install aside from that issue. The psu was the hardest part because the case did not have much extra space. and all the extra cables were kind of in the way.

but i got it all in nice and neat and installed the latest drivers. Only game i have for the pc is witcher 2 and i am off to check that out

thanks for the help guys

lol...thanks

how are people able to tell what temperature their card is running at? i saw on the reviews at newegg people commenting on their temp

i was just playing witcher 2 on ultra and it was silky smooth and looked so amazing

thanks. installed afterburner and just setup the on screen display to show fps and temp.

what is the normal operating temp range for a gpu? what temp would make me be concerned?

played witcher 2 on ultra and while it ran perfectly the fps was generally between 22-28 fps. seems kinda low to me

If you're getting low fps, try dropping down the AA from 8X or higher to 4X, or use FXAA with regular AA disabled if the game supports. Battlefield 3 is one such example.

i think the low fps was just due to the area i was in. i noticed as i went to area with more action the fps kept going up and up.

what about the temps of the card? mine was getting up to 85C. is it normal for them to run that hot? i did not see an option in afterburner to keep the temps in a certain range other than adjusting the fan speed

That temp is fine, but I'd probably be ramping the fan up a bit. Afterburner is a bit buggy with fan speed and it may or may not keep the fan speed at idle speed under load. Try exiting afterburner and see if the fan speed changes under load (you'll have to listen for it)

just click on the afterburner icon in your task bar and when it opens, click the settings button towards the bottom. go to fan, then check the box enable user defined. now you can set the fan speed according to temp. good luck. i like to use 40c @40%, then make a straight line up to 90c @100%. now as your GPU gets hotter, the fans will increase as well, then decrease as the temps go down.
