Hello everyone,

I m just facing a big computer problem here.

I have an old machine and the company who sold the machine doesn't exist anymore wich means no maintenance is possible anymore .The machine is still working very well but the computer who pilote the machine is as old as the machine is (from 2000). The computer is going to breakdown quite soon and i would like to make it new again so I can use the machine a bit longer. I already contact the Pc guy of the company who sold the machine at that time so he could make an update to a new PC woking windows XP but there are some compatibility problems (witj the temporisation) and he s not able to do it.

So I m asking the help of anyone is/know a professional/a company in computering and who would be able to build a new old PC.

Here are some information about the PC i m talking about : Windows 98, 256 coulours, pentium III genuineIntel x86 Family6 Model8 Stepping1, 348 Mb of RAM, ...

What is it you want new in it? You would be better just buying a whole new computer.

If you buy a modern graphics card and don't buy a modern CPU then it will be bottlenecked. It would be the same if you bought a modern CPU and didn't buy a modern GPU.

You need to update your OS and you need to get more ram. You need to get a new GPU and a new CPU. Also, you've not told us, but I'm pretty sure you need a larger HDD.
ALSO, by getting new ram dimms, a new GPU and a new CPU, you're probably going to need a new motherboard.

So basically what I'm saying is, go and buy a new PC and stop trying to get someone to upgrade your old one.

My guess is the computer is used to control a milling machine or something similar and the control hardware/software won't work on a newer computer/newer OS.

Do you have the hard drive backed up? You didn't mention the hard drive but that and the power supply are probably the most likely failures. You should be able to find someone to make an image of the existing hard drive, replace the old drive with a new one, then restore the image.

That computer is not really that old and parts can still be had for it. Regardless of what else you do, keep the hard drive backed up.

Buying/building a new computer now is possible, he'd just have to get a copy of XP. And to what Zpixel said, I doubt he needs a video card since what he's doing with it isn't that intense based on his specs.

Thanks for your advices about the hard drive. I have no idea what id my power supply like. Do you know how I could find parts for a computer and/or someone to put them together?

What part of the world are you in?

One source for parts for older computers is Ebay.
