New Computer-Will it run A/V in sleep mode?

New computer. Bought a EMachine-EL1358-51W. I use the AVG program. I have it scheduled to run a scan daily at 3:00 AM. Can my computer be put in the sleep mode and still have AVG do a scan? Thanks!

don't think so, normally in sleep i think the hard-drive and all stop anly leaving the processor and ram i think on/powered, and since the scans normally scan the hard drive, they wouldn't be able to even if they could run, so i'm guessing no. also as long as you don't torrent or download off of/view random sites you should be fine.

jonnyp's right, really the only important thing that maintains power is the RAM, to bring it back to it's current state. DRAM (and SDRAM) require a constant refresh to hold its data. It's in no way important for this discussion but I'ma nerd and going to say it anyway, even with your PC turned completely off there is still 5Vs running through your board for soft power (unless unplugged or PSU switched off)

So are you 2 saying that I really don't need the AVG program at all? Is putting my computer in sleep mode every night a safe way to go? Thanks!

No no you need some kind of antivirus, especially with windows. We're just saying you will need to wake it before you scan

i was saying as long as you aren't visiting random sites and downloading a ton of stuff then daily scans aren't needed.

A scan maybe once a week would be good enough.

And regularly turning off your computer all the way is good for it.
