Is it really cheaper to build myself?

Today in bb's ad I saw a gateway i5 2500k with 1.5tb hdd and 8gb ram for about $500.

I've been piecing a system together and for roughly the same stuff maybe besides video card, I'm getting around $1100 to build myself. I know you are getting an inferior motherboard and PS and who knows what else with the gateway. But is the difference in quality really worth the price difference?

yes the difference in quality is worth the price. Plus, you will not be getting a k with a gateway, just a 2500 and a H67 motherboard (knocking out any OC ability), and a sub-par RAM speed and quality (probably DDR3-1066), and no GPU at all. Then you will have a 250-300 watt noname PSU that will not hold up to a GPU to take advantage of the power of a 2500 anyway.

Quoted for truth.
