Too much ram???

Hey guys, so I'm building my own computer and here's my question. How much ram is too much ram? I know it might seem like a funny question, but I feel like I'm going a little bit excessive at this point.

I'm building the most powerful computer I've ever built.

Here are the specs:
-MSI 990FXA-GD65 AMD 990FX Socket AM3+ Motherboard
-AMD FX-8120 3.10 GHz Eight Core AM3+ Unlocked CPU
-GeForce GTX 590 Graphics Card
-CORSAIR Vengeance 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Desktop Memory
-Seagate ST3000DM001 Barracuda 7200.12 Hard Drive - 3TB, SATA III (6Gb/s), 3.5", 7200RPM, 64MB
-Sabrent SBT-SP6C 6-Channel 5.1 Surround Sound 3D PCI Sound Card
-Ultra U12-40528 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 PCI Express x1 Expansion Card - 2 External USB 3.0 Ports, Up to 5Gbps
-Samsung SH-222AB/BEBE Internal DVD Writer - DVD+R 22X, DVD+RW 8X, DVD-RW 6X, DVD-RAM 12X, CD-R 48X, OEM
-Thermaltake TPG-850M ToughPower Grand Power Supply - 850W, 80 Plus Gold, 140mm Fan, CrossFireX Certified, SLI Certified
-Thermaltake Element G Mid Tower Case - Colorshift Fans, Adjustable Fan Speed, 7 x 3.5" Drive Bays, 2 x 2.5" Drive Bays

I'll most likely need liquid cooling too, but right now my main concern is WHY DO I NEED SO MUCH RAM? 32GB is pretty excessive in my opinion and I wanted to know is there any point in having so much ram?

Also an eight-core chip. I just want a really powerful computer, but will 32GB be too much and have just excessive amounts with not enough programs to fill it?

What do you guys think?

What are you planning to do with this PC?

Right now the bulldozer chips are not preforming as expected. You would be better off going with the i7 2600k with 8gb of RAM. 16gb if you do something really intensive that will need more than 8gb (unlikeny)

Yeahh, it was going to be used to run a server too. But yeah, I guess 32 was a little ridiculous. So 16 is pretty much more than enough? Cool, I knew I was going crazy if I wanted 32. Oops

I am not too familiar with servers so google around to see what you would need to run a server with the load that you plan on running it with. There is a chance that you might need a larger amount of RAM.

my 2gb PC does pretty much anything but 32gb of ram that's as big as my SSD

if you are running a server on it then you would need a lot o ram but maybe not that much ram

I also highly second that you go with the 2600k. If you're spending this kind of money, Intel is where you want to be. I could see it if someone wanted to go AMD to support them, but like someone else said, Bulldozer currently has problems. Also in my opinion, some of their recent decisions regarding PR and their product lines have been extremely poor. I wouldn't support their processor market right now.

Also, did I see a 64GB 7200rpm mechanical drive listed? If so, I assume you plan on using it as a boot drive. I just wanted to bring up the existence of SSD's if you would rather go that route. Most people including myself would - no question, but figured I would throw it out there as a possibility in case you DIDN'T want a solid state drive.

I don't believe in to much RAM :)

I agree with you there! haha.

32gb is excessive, but in your position, if I had the money, I'd do the exact same thing!

Especially for running a server. It's unlikely you'll need 32gb, but hey, it won't hurt ;)

32 gig in 1333 modules costs about 160 bucks...so really? hell if i had the slots id do it... ram is cheap, get all you can, do not let people tell you otherwise

Don't motherboard's have a limit to how much RAM you could put into a system?

Yeah, a lot of newer mobos have 32GB as the limit. (like mine) It is also a windows limit, too. You have to get Win7 Professional, enterprise, or ultimate to get above 16GB. (And of course, 64-bit.)

kinda off topic, but I saw a report of a dual-SB-E mobo that supported up to 96gb of RAM.

I couldn't help but notice thst your hard drive is SATA revision III, hard drives don't even max out revisio II so there is no point on using one at revision III, you might as well save the money and put it towards a good Intel processor

The cheapest 500GB drive out there that isn't a hitachi is gonna be that seagate. Even if there was one cheaper that was SATA II, the price difference between them would not be significant.

I can't help thinking that if you want to spend that sort of money on RAM, you're better off picking up some Corsair Dominator. The 16GB kit is about £230 and it's very fast. I'm picking some up this week for my revamp.

Increased frequency doesn't really give real world benefits with DD3 as much as DDR2 did.

Get rid of the GTX590, waste of money and relies on SLI drivers.

Get rid of the bulldozer, they suck

Only use 32GB RAM if you plan on running virtual machines, ram disks, or mount many images.

LoL you people are crazy if you need 32 GB of RAM lol.Even if it's cheap,I would rather save that money for something else rather than buying 32 GB of RAM memory lmao.Hey....that is 32 GB!!!Not MB lol.GB!!!
Just who the hell needs SO MUCH lmao???Only if you are ULTRA CRAZY GAMER and are playing 20 games at once rofl!

I am not saying that it is bad to have 32 GB,but for Christ sake lol...why the hell would one computer need so much anyway lol?!?!
Even when running a server it is still too much.

Still I wish I can trade my 512 MB of RAM for 32 GB of RAM :D:D:D
