Need help for new pc

Need help on what to get for a new PC. I plan on buying parts and putting it together, but i have a budget of $200. Can i do anything with that?

first you should tell us what you want to do on a computer and what kind of computer you might have in mind, also do you have any computer parts.

you can buy a used computer that has windows on it for $200 and under,

building a computer is possible if you already have windows and if you don't mind buying cheaper off brands parts ,but remmeber other people here will tell you to buy high quality parts that cost lots of money.

Like said, if you don't have windows, that'll be $100 alone, so it will be tough. Better to either save money or buy a used one.

No I have windows and a power supply and cpu and case. I just need the rest.

Thats great. so you have:
windows - what version do you have?
power supply - how many watts and what kind?
cpu - does this come by itself or on a board and what kind?
case - what does it look like or what brand/model?

and you need:
motherboard
memory
harddrive
cd/dvd rom drive
videocard

What do you want to do on your PC?
What CPU do you have?
It's all very well saying "440W PSU" but what brand is it, how many amps does it give out on the +12v rail? (see the sticker on the PSU)

Depending on what you want to do, you may not need a graphics card, or a large amount of RAM. You need to answer these questions first before we can help...

What is the kind on the box/cd, it will be retail, OEM, or Upgrade, this is important as one cannot be used, the other can only be used if it has never been used before, and the other can be used no matter

power supply - how many watts and what kind?

440w is fine, but the brand is a very important thing for power supplies, a crappy one will blow and most likely take other parts with it

cpu - does this come by itself or on a board and what kind?

We need to know this so we know the kind of motherboard you can get

case - what does it look like or what brand/model?

Not really a need to know thing, but if your case is mATX and smaller only and we normally link ATX, then you'll be screwed outa some cash

Hmm $200 isn't going to get you very far, you could maybe use:

CPU: Intel Pentium E6600 $69.99
Mobo: ASRock G31M-S mATX 775 $42.99
RAM: 2x2GB DDR2 800MHz (to make 4GB) $49.98
SSD: OCZ Oynx 32GB $54.99
DVD Drive: LG 22x DVD-RW drive $15.99

Total: $233.94

It's a very tight build. You could always just buy 2GB of RAM and save yourself $25 there as XP isn't going to recongize all 4GB (well XP 32-bit certainly isn't). A 32GB SSD may be a bit of a tight squeeze depending on how many programs you want to install, guessing you already have an external HDD to save your files onto? With only $200, a graphics card is a no no, you'll have to make do with onboard video and sadly the E6600 is really the only half decent CPU that'll fit your budget, it's got 2MB cache and it's a dual-core, but sadly it's an 775 CPU and uses DDR2 RAM which is expensive now. The cheap Sandy-Bridge option is the Celeron G440 which is only $40 but it's a single-core so it would be slower than the E6600 but it does use DDR3 RAM which is much cheaper.

I think you'd be better off selling off what you currently have and then use your $200 and the money you make from the sale to buy a much better used PC on eBay or somewhere.

Also never heard of "Spyder" as a brand of PSU so you'd probably end up forking out even more to get a decent PSU.

I'd use Jonny's choice of CPU, RAM, Mobo and PSU, and my SSD and DVD drive, then you'd have a half-decent build. The CPU, RAM and Mobo Jonny chose are better the ones that I chose, Socket 1155 vs 775, DDR3 vs DDR2 and again 1155 mobo vs 775.

I would also look online (like Ebay, Craigslist) for a used system. You can find pretty decent systems online for that. Even one that's a few years old would most likely be fine. At worst you may have to upgrade or purchase a video card for it.

absolutely not. Most laptops you are stuck with the GPU and CPU that you get unless you want to spend hundreds (600+) and hours to upgrade it with something that may or may not work. Also, even the top end models are going to be more expensive and less power than a desktop, and on the desktop you have future compatibility. Like a 1155LGA board will be able to use ivybridge assuming BIOS support, where your SB laptop is stuck as a SB laptop for all eternity.
