Install win7 without DVD drive

Hi
I have the following:

IDE 40gb with win7 installed
IDE 40gb formatted HD
New Sata 250gb formatted HD

I get an error when trying to install win7 onto the sata drive but it installs ok on both ide drives.

Is it possible to install win7 onto the sata disk using setup files from either ide drive?

What error do you get when installing to a sata drive? You shouldn't be having any issues installing it.

Hi man, its 0x80070017. Seems to be very common but people have different complex solutions so really want to just bypass that.

The sata drive works fine alongside my IDE drives, it just seems the dvd drive is the problem.

Im sure I once mounted the files using power iso and i had to open the repair/command prompt and type a small command then restart PC and I was installing the OS no problem. Long time ago though, and i cant find a similar guide that I had way back then, it was such a simple command too.

Basically the idea was:

mount setup files
run installation
goto repair/command prompt
type * command so it copies setup files to sata drive
reboot and sata drive boots up and installation starts

when I tried installing windows XP instead it did the driver installation bit but then said it couldnt see any hard disks.

Ive just found something, some guy said a certain archive couldnt be read from the win 7 dvd when he tried to copy the setup files to his hard drive and mine also cant copy the same file, it sounds like a specific hard drive model and dvd drive conflict, the fact it installs ok on my ide drives suggest that anyway.

So are you trying to install by using a dvd drive or no? This thread may help you.

If you are unable to copy files, it could be a memory issue. What version of XP were you trying to install? The original version of XP with no service pack applied didn't have much sata driver support.

Ive seen that but i dont have a usb flash drive, i want to use the ide drive to launch the setup.

i downloaded an app that does exactly what i want to do but it doesnt support ide drives.

Theres a file on the DVD called INSTALL.WIM and it wont copy to my hard disk, and some guy had exact same problem, but theres no problem when installing onto IDE drives.

What system or motherboard are you trying to install this on? Is the sata controller set to IDE/compatibility mode instead of ahci/raid?

I always custom build so its:

asus m2a-mx mobo
amd athlon 6000+ dual core 3ghz
3gb ram

The option in the bios is sata, raid or ahci and its on sata

Not sure whats going on here then. I would try a different dvd drive to install windows to see if you get the same thing. Are you using a genuine microsoft install cd? or burnt copy?

Fixed it. Im new to SATA drives and I didnt know about the unusual drive config so I either had the dvd drive on primary master with a jumper or primary slave without a jumper, not primary master without jumper like it is now lol

Sorry for messing you around. Youve helped me out a lot here and im really happy with the speed now, feels so much faster than the IDE's im used to:good:

All i need to do now is find out how to boot so my ide is a logical drive but ill soon find out.
cheers
