What's a "slave hd" for..?

no,its just a second harddrive connected to the main harddrive and stores stuff on it

extra storage space for pics, music, games and stuff

Can a slave hd hold a fresh new clean Linux OS, same as the primary's OS.. and somehow be used to repair and/or replace a corrupted primary hd's OS.. like how Windows OS's have a restore system..?

Since most Linux OS's are free ISO image downloads, and the quarter million peripheral softwares are all free too.. do you suppose one could copy the ISO to the slave, along with a downloads manager set of updates, and the files backup, to somehow all be applied to reinstall the primary's OS from the slave after DBAN erasing the primary..?

yes you can clone your main harddrive and store the clone on the second harddrive, then if the first harddrive has a problem you can go into bios and change boot order to boot the second harddrive first

i use acronis true image

no. As far as I know, and it has been a year and a half or more since i had a IDE desktop to use slave on, but as far as I know SLAVE setting just hides it from the boot menu. I used it on a IDE drive with Windows 98SE and Windows ME to pull files under XP.

I am almost 99% sure you can not install an OS to a slave drive and boot from it. You would have to set the second drive to Cable Select to do that.

it is a jumper setting that is neither master or slave. I have no idea what it is for, but I use it for having 2 bootable drives on the same IDE channels.

Then can you clone the OS on the slave to the primary..?

i sata and ide drives, the ide drives are set to cable select, thats so in bios i can change which drive to boot to. I have my main drive cloned and its on the second drive.

so yes you can clone the os on the primary drive and put it on the secondary drive, set them to cable select and you can boot from either one.
