hi all, having problems with hard drive. start up message, hard drive disc failure is imminant, back up your hard drive and replace it. press f2 to continue (starting). have ran hardware diagnostic tools, ran hd test. test results ,smart status test, failed. smart short self test, failed. all other tests ok. i take i will have to replace the hd,, can i recover from the old hd to the new one, dont have recovery disc. if so how. i am running windows vista home premium, intel(r)core (tm)2cpu. [email protected]. 2.00gb ram. nvidia geforce 8400 gs. hp pavillion m7770uk. i have product id number. many thanks for any help that you can give me.

I wouldn't clone a drive that is failing, you will most likely end up with hiccups on the new drive. Contact HP to see if recovery disks are available for your model. It's also possible that there is option to make recovery cd's, look under an HP program on the start menu.

thanks for your reply.i have installed a new hard drive, i have a xp disc with activation key, i managed to restart with disc ,it started to load files, when it went to start in windows , had a blue screen which said it had stopped the computer to prevent any damage. and to change the hard drive. do i need to do anything to the new hard drive first format?. many thanks.

Sounds like you have a hardware failure somewhere, possible bad memory or something else. You may have to take this in to have it diagnosed.

If your new HDD works properly then some other piece of the hardware is not working properly.
It might be the RAM memory like johnb35 said.
Use MemTest86+ to test RAM and if it reports any errors, replace the RAM chips.

By the way did you change anything in the BIOS?

Also is your HDD PATA/IDE or SATA?

hi. used the memtest no errors reported. nothing in the bios has been changed. my hd is sata. when i put my old hard drive back in, and ran a system recovery everthing worked fine, with no message of hard drive failure. after a day it went back with the hd iminent failure message.the message says to press f2 to continue, it then starts as normal, just a bit slower.many thanks

Did you get an error report code from the bsod?

Did your windows XP fully install before BSOD and copy all files?

Things to try:
Reset your BIOS to factory default.
(Depending on your technical knowledge you can also try and flush the BIOS memory)

If windows did not finish the install or copy all the files, make a USB bootable XP from flash drive or external HDD.

A bad stick of ram would usually report or show symptoms well before you finished installing an OS, a slower system can be a symptom of a bad stick.
(If you have more than 1 stick of RAM installed you could try and use 1 at a time to determine if that is the problem)

It is also possible that you baught a faulty replacement hdd, it rarely happens but sometimes does. Try the hdd on another system or another/spare hdd in your machine.

i have now cloned my old hard drive to a new one, useing sticky- how to clone a hard drive method, so far i have had no problems. if i get any problems i will repost. in the mean time many, many thanks to all who replied.
