Hello everyone , this is my first post i hope you can help me please.

I have £1200 to spend on a pc, a friend of mine said i could build a better pc for the money than buying one from a high street store, i have made some enquires about how one builds a pc and looked at some youtube video's but to be honest its a little out of my league ,so i have found someone who will assemble the parts for me if i get him the parts to assemble , i am able to install the OS as i have to quite frequently on my current pc

The computer will be used for gaming especially flight sims , i beleive flight sims require multicore processors also alot of ram ,

I currently have a dual core processor and 3gb ram the graphics card is a gt550ti

I,m not sure where to start , the only highstreet store near me is PC world and Maplin ,

i would really like a new PC and not use anything from my current computer as this pc will be handed to the man who will assemble my parts as part of the payment, for building the new computer ,

Suppose my question is where do i start ?

That is pretty powerful system, so you could adjust the spec up or down depending on your needs.

The graphics card you recommend the hd6950 is that much of a jump from the gt550ti i use at the moment and if i go for the hd6950 can i run 2 with that power supply

Not first hand use of bulldozer, but the reviews have been pretty average.

The amd may look impressive because if the 8 cores but that really means nothing, I can tell you first hand, I just got rid of a 3 core amd cpu and replaced it with a 2 core I3 and the i3 has almost twice the performance in all benchmarks.

Also going for the sandybridge 1155 socket leaves you in a much better position for future upgrades as the next run of intel processors called, ivy bridge will be on the same socket which means you could later upgrade to the latest processor range without changing anything else.
 
I was really hoping that this pc will not only be rock solid but also be able to keep me going for at least 3 years without needing updating, if your recommending not to spend any money till the ivybridge is released i will do that.
 
I updated my build post new user, forgot about the hard drives, i would highly recommend an ssd, if you are going to be gaming.

Yes new user, i am not saying jump to ivy bridge when it comes out, but even if it is 3 or 5 years down the line, it means you could jump up a cpu range without changing any other components and even without the hassle of rebuilding the machine, as changing the cpu can be done with the machine still fully built, just lift the original cpu out and drop the new one in and your done.

the solid state drive you recommended , is purely for os and programs then put documents folder on the 500gb sata drive ?

Yes that is what most of us do, ssd`s are one of the best components for fast performance, but to our saddness they are expensive so most people use ssd for os, programs and games and a standard hdd for files.

You can get smaller ssd`s, I have a 60gb one but if you are going to keep some games on it, i would go for a 120gb
 
Nice thanks will defiantly go for a 120gb ssd, James if I get the graphics card you recommended the 1gb but instead buy 2 rather than 1 will there be any noticeable benefit .

Yes new user it would still be within your £1200, you could buy 2 and run them in crossfire configuration, if you think you need that much power.
 
James still struggling here with graphics which is better a 1x2gb hd6950 or 2x1gb hd6950

or would it be exactly the same
 
You would probably get a bit better performance from the 2x1gb card, and that would also give you more monitor connection options.
