Time to upgrade the......7900GS :)

A new LAN driver came out for your board yesterday. Download it and reinstall it.

Also, download and install this and restart your computer.

Make sure also that you don't install the nvidia sound (HDMI) drivers or 3d stuff unless you need it. I have seen it bugger up stuff too, so if the above fails, uninstall that stuff.

Done - no help I even reset the CMOS to no avail. BUT, a friend loaned me an ancient network card (he bought as the PC only had an onboard 56k modem) and it worked immediately !!

Soo....OMG the graphics in Dirt 2 and Crysis are amazing !!!! I've got a lot of gaming to catch up on (Crysis 2, Mass Effect 2, BF3/MW3....) so will be a while till the 560 Ti 448 is taxed. It's awesome clicking the "Detect Optimum Settings" button and everything flips from low to ultra

Hmm well if you're happy with that solution, good. I wouldn't be. You have gone presumably from ADSL+ or similar to dial up speeds in an attempt to up graphics from 2007 to 2012. You should be able to have both.

I would even consider reinstalling the OS, reinstalling latest motherboard drivers, disabling any non-used hardware (usually there's a lot, legacy interface support for example) , driver stack (being careful what is actually installed). Then applications.

For me when I do this, it takes about an hour at most. Win 7 installs in about 15 minutes (SSD helps). Do it in the right order and you should have both your LAN and your GPU working together.

If you don't want to do that, best bet now is to Roll Back the Realtek driver to prior to any issues arose.

From my research there are (at least) two more checks that could be made if you want to confirm this, however i wouldnt bother and just roll back the driver.


1. The first relates to the obvious, hardware issue flags in Device Manager.

a. Right click on Computer, Properties.
b. Click on Device Manager (in top left panel)

Are there any red or yellow symbols, if so what are they?


2., Check Windows Updates for recent "Microsoft's View of Best Driver" for your LAN (will look something like Realtek R8168D/8111D NDIS 6.2).


4. What to do
Roll back your driver in Device Manager to a previous version (before Windows Update). This will essentially take it back to when its was working.

I do have both The ancient network card I borrowed runs faster than my ADSL connection. Upgrading the Bios and reinstalling win 7 may reboot my onboard LAN (I tried system restore - but nothing), but as things are working fine I've just disabled the onboard in the Bios and away we go !
