external hdd or internal hdd w/ enclosure?

I was wondering which is less money.

1. External hard drive (eSATA)

2. Internal hard drive with hard drive enclosure for external use

I've never had an external hard drive or an internal hard drive with an enclosure, but need an external drive for backup badly. Gone way too long without one. But I don't know if the enclosures give you the option to choose USB/eSATA/etc. eSATA would be my choice because of speed. I'll be purchasing whatever I have to the first week of April, so any thoughts are great.

Thanks.

Back when HDD prices were decent I would have said a Rosewill enclosure and an internal HDD. But with prices as they are' you're better off getting an external drive itself. But if you get a smaller size drive it would be abut the same.

In any case, here are all the external eSATA drives on Newegg.

If you would prefer to go the enclosure + internal drive route, I highly recommend this enclosure:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817173042
That enclosure comes in four different versions: Black or silver with USB 3.0 & eSATA or black/silver with USB2.0 & eSATA.

Thanks. May go for the hard drive enclosure then. 1,108 reviews and 4 out of 5 eggs is pretty good. I was wondering though and I know this is gonna sound stupid, but I have no choice but to ask. How do I know if I have SATA I or SATA II internal hard drive capability? I know my transfer rate is up to 3Gb/s and not 6Gb/s. Does that tell me? Thanks for the answer and thanks for the links!

Cheap:

I like this one the most.It is not an enclosure, but it is capable of connecting 2.5 and 3.5 PATA and SATA hard disk drives and SSD drives on any USB port.
In short you can connect anything.Old,middle,new.It always works.
I have one these at home and it is so damn great. And the most important thing it's SO DAMN CHEAP lol.

Cheers!

Thanks! This is what I have right now. I used it to check an old hard drive about two years ago or so.

For external drives that will regularly be used I always recommend a real enclosure. I only recommend the USB bridge for recovering data.

Yeah, I honestly think I'm gonna go with that $24.99 enclosure on Newegg.

Cheapest 1 TB internal hd with 64MB cache is $109 and cheapest 1.5 TB hd with 64MB cache is $119, so might as well get that 1.5 TB for now just to back up my internal hd in my rig. Then later on I can start getting bigger ones as I use up more space on my rig. Down to about 400 GB now from 1 TB.
