which laptop would you buy for $1,200

hey guys, i need some input. i want to buy a new laptop but cant decide what brand to get i am 95% decided that i want the HP dv7-6c90us. its awesome looking, black aluminum chassis, and the specs are great for what i do. (light gaming, video, music, internet etc). i know hp doesn't have the best track record so i want to get some opinions on what you would buy. i have a max budget of $1,200, and i dont want to go lower than the hp specs(the same or better). the specs on the hp are:

2nd generation Intel® Core i7-2670QM Processor 2.20GHz with Turbo Boost Technology up to 3.10GHz
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
8GB DDR3 RAM
1TB 5400RPM hard drive
Radeon HD 7470M switchable graphics with up to 1024MB GDDR5 and up to 5093MB total graphics memory
17.3-inch diagonal HD+ BrightView LED-backlit display (1600 x 900)

thats the thing is there are sooooo many laptops out there my eyes are crossed already trying to compare all of these computers. there is just so many its crazy. i was hoping i could find someone that has done more long term comparing than i have.

i have just about given up on reviews because they are the opposite of what people say. like HP -dv7 series high reviews from users on you tube, pc mag top editors pic, amazon great reviews, my old hp was awesome. but alot of people say they are crap. DELL- people say they are killer, tons of them have horrible reviews on above mentioned sites as well as others. ACER- same as HP reviews, i have had 2 acers and they were bullet proof, kicked it of the table, spilled coffee on it, didn't miss a beat. ALIENWARE/DELL- same as dell reviews, people say they are awesome but written reviews are horrible. sooo you see what i mean, where the hell do you start? who is right who is wrong, i dont have a million dollars to sample laptops. huh im stumped

I have had nothing but problems out of both acer and HP. And we are not talking about droping them or anything. Talking about GPU failures, Motherboard failures, and flimsy LCDs. Dell, I have only experienced their Latitude and Precision line, but they are nearly bullet proof.

And reviews are only as good as the people reviewing them.

Yeah it's the Inspiron and Studio lines of Dell that are really poor. I actually have an Inspiron 15 sitting at work 3 months out of warranty - the CPU died. (Athlon II P340). Kinda surprised me.

this is why i HATE buying a new laptop. there is sooo many to weed thru. some are good, some are bad, all of these are bad, all of these are good. the one with this in it is good but the one with this in it is bad. its frustrating and disheartening. i just want a killer all around machine that looks cool, doesn't feel cheap and plastic and will last at least 4 years. it sux and its a shame that even when you spend $1200 on a computer (which in my book aint cheap) you have to cross your fingers and HOPE it works when you get it, then you hope it lasts more than one year.

Get a Dell Latitude E6520 or E6420. With the nVidia Quadro card in those things you can usually do some light gaming. I have an E6500 I bought in July of 2009 and I haven't had a single issue. Dells business line support for those machines is much better than consumer support.

isn't there at least one brand that that you can buy most models from cheap to expensive and you can be confident that it will work properly and last a long time? why make all your products pieces of expensive crap except for one or two models? it doesn't make sense to me, but it seems like thats how it is with all laptop computer makers.

you have to pay to get the good stuff. Most companies, except maybe asus, MSI, and sager, you can't really count on all of their products at all. Business class machines seem to have good support and build quality, so go for them if you can. Dell Latitude and Precision, HP Probook and elitebook, and Thinkpad T and W series.

thanks for the advice, i will keep that in mind as i continue my search.
that is funny though, "if you want a good computer from us that lasts its gonna cost you four grand"! hahaha yea right.

That phrase right there depends on the manufacturer and the model you purchase from them.

I didn't say that. You have to pay for quality. Basically, a $600 laptop is not going to be that great from any company. at around $1200 they are good from most, just don't buy beyond the budget. IF you find $1200 laptops with Gt540s/HD7470m 4GB and a i5 processor, then there is one with a GTX570m, 16GB, and i7 quad core, chances are it is not a good quality.
