Question about servers

What make a server different from a normal computer?

Im asking because Im looking into making a system to play online games and to run script that will run up to 12h to 24h a day. and like to know which one can handle the load I plan on putting on them.

Nothing really. you can use a windows xp or windows 7 machine as a server. A server is a machines that offers services to clients. Depending on the load and services you want to offer would determine the harware requirements and which operating system you would require.

Plus Windows Server O.S's cost more and need licencing per seat/user or per computer. Does he mean servers for within a game such as Team Fortress 2
 
A nice server is really just a nice pc without the need for graphics. So they tend to have alot of ram, fast cpu, and fast hard drives with plenty of space.
 
Servers are built for raw power, typically without decent graphics.
Another difference is that servers are very loud compared to a typical PC. You'll probably want to put it in a room you don't sleep in, especially if you eventually get more than one.
