Best Graphics Card For £50?

Pell

New Member
Hi,
My mobo is Asus M4A78LT-M and i would like to upgrade my graphics card from a gt 240. Also i do not know what slot it is? please could you help me decide what card to get.

Thanks :D

I would say with that budget, new theres not a lot. If you go second hand shoot for gtx 260, hd 5770. Maybe go down to a hd 4870 if theres not a lot. Best place to look would be gumtree for your area, ebay and CEX.

actually what is your psu? Thing like gtx 260 require quite a bit of decent power. And if your not rocking a well produced PSU you could find yourself in trouble.

What power supply do you have?

A GT240 is a low power card, especially when compared to a 260 or 275. There is no point in getting a graphics card if you are unable to power any of it

Right i took a look at my PSU as i did not know what wattage it was capable of and it is only a 450W :/ so i am assuming most cards will need at least a 550W? :/ nevermind ill stick with my 240 as it is a good card for me.

If you want a decent power supply for fairly cheap Pell, my recommendation is usually the good old Corsair CX500. It's a 500W unit and will power any of the above cards just fine apart from maybe really power hungry cards such as the 9800 GX2 and the GTX 280/285 and perhaps the 4870 X2, but for the 9800 GTXs, GTX 260s, 275s, Radeon 4870s (not the X2), yeah it should be fine. Sounds to me a bit like you are using a generic brand PSU right now. Did you get your PC custom-built by a shop or did you order the PC from a custom-builder online? Because they usually cheap out on power supplies.

Here's a link for the CX500 http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/cmpsu-500cxv2uk.html if you don't feel 500W is enough then the CX600 is a 600W variant and is also available from Novatech.

I would recommend upgrading your PSU at some point the future regardless of whether or not you want to upgrade your graphics card. Remember the PSU is arguably the most important component in a computer, and it often gets overlooked.

i will take a look into it, i am guessing it comes with all of the connections i will need? and all the wiring? :/ im unsure on PSU's i don't know much about them at all and thanks for the advice :D

Honestly, 400w is enough. A good one though, not a cheap one, I can power a 560 with a 380 watts by seasonic. Antec, OCZ,SILVERSTONE, SEASONIC, and Corsair are very good, antec is okay to great.

Yes the CX500 will have everything you need, and so will the CX600. They both even have 2x 6-pin power connectors so if you end up buying something like a GTX 275 in the future that requires two 6 pin power connectors then you should be OK.

No you can't. :P Not without breaking something. 380W for a GTX 560 is not enough.

you may want to look for something with an 8pin connector.
Good point, in which case the OCZ ZS 650W is pretty good. I've got one and it has 1x 6-pin connector and 1x 6+2-pin connector - the 6+2 can either be 6-pin or 8-pin.

650W http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/ocz-zs650w-uk.html
750W http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/ocz-zs750w-uk.html

Normally I'd say 750W would be way way way overkill for this kind of system (650W is probably overkill too) but as the 750W is exactly the same price as the 650W it makes sense to get that over the 650W.

A 380W is not enough for a GTX 560 at all, in now way, shape or form.

And I would suggest against Novatech, not because they are a poor retailer, they absolutely are not, but because a lot of the time they are over priced. Case in point here:

or

would be the better options for much less
