Static public IP?

Is there any way to do this for free? How?

Seen a lot of websites about it but is totally confusing me. Am living in the UK btw, and the reason I need it is to connect to a SHH server I have set up on the host but the IP address keeps changing! Some kind of software, or domain name would also be fine to give me some kind of static address to connect to.

The only way to get a static IP is to call your ISP and request one, however they usually charge a fee. One alternative is to setup a free account with a service such as dyndns.org, which lets you install a client on your home server/computer and it updates your external IP with a DNS name of your choice. So you can access your SSH server by typing in dan03cool.dyndns.org instead of the IP.

It used to be free, they must have changed, sorry about that. I would search for free dyndns alternative.

took your advice and found no-ip.com, sets a domain to your ip and you can have a program on your computer that updates the domain every time your ip changes.
