Hi, I got a computer from a friend, he told me it wont boot. It has a 2ghz Pentium duel core, 3gigs of ram and a 500gig hdd. Had Vista on it. I got it and cleaned the dust out and tried it and it posts, you can go in bios, but after the black screen with a white dash in top left freezes instead of blinking. I tried putting acouple different OS on it from dvd and usb, the boot order is correct, and still freezes allowing you to do nothing. Is the motherboard shot? Thanks.

The motherboard might be shot if you were trying to run components that use more wattage than the maximum allowance of the power supply provides. I would look to the memory dying, had you not said it does in fact POST. Can it be started in safe mode?

Disconnect everything but keyboard, mouse, 1 stick of ram and video card. See if it will boot up. Remove all usb devices and pci addin cards if they exist. Usually this symptom is from a bad hard drive or ram.

Ive disconnected the hard drive, im gonna try ram. And it came with a factory 400w psu with 2 16amp 12v+ rails. I cannot boot in safe mode because it frezzes when its trying to find a boot device. I put the hard drive in another computer and it works it goes to the repair vista screen because its a different computer.
