Is it an abandoned socket? Is Intel planning to do something with it? Or did they just release 3 processors for it and run?
 
Ah, great to know. I was actually planning on upgrading to LGA 2011. I was looking at the i7-3820.
 
A 3820 may be overkill - I'd stick with a 3770K on a Z77 1155 board if you want an i7, or wait for IB-E if you really must have an LGA 2011 chip.
 
well, for the price I think the 3820 is the better choice for me, the 3820 being $299 and the 3770k being $349.

Yeah but remember the LGA 1155 boards are usually cheaper. I'd wait anyway and see what IB-E brings to the table before you invest in LGA 2011.
 
The motherboards for the 1155 processors are cheaper.

Here's a Z77 board for 1155 CPUs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128549 it costs $210 and it's a fairly high-end board.

Here's an X79 board for 2011 CPUs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131801 it's $320 and one of the cheper X79 boards.

Sure, you can spend less on the X79 boards, but when you're buying stuff as high-end as this, would you want to cheap out on something?

Overall, the 3770K + Z77 board comes out cheaper and usually faster than a 3820 + X79 configuration - see here http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/551?vs=523 and the 3770K has overclocking potential too, whereas the 3820 doesn't.

For me, it'd be a no-brainer...

Oh yeah, I see what you're saying about the motherboard to CPU price differences. I sure wish that X79 motherboards were cheaper, would have been a solid choice for me.

I mean, I COULD get an ASRock X79 + i7 3820 for around $440. But, I wouldn't mind have a sabertooth either.
 
Yeah I wouldn't pair that cheapo ASRock board with the 3820. You've got a processor like the 3820, you want a great board too.

I'd honestly just grab a 3770K, a Z77 board such as the UD5H, a great cooler and then overclock the 3770K and be done with it. If you wanna save even more money go for a 2600K - it's a lot cheaper than a 3770K and it performs about the same and overclocks just as well too.

LGA 2011 is no different from LGA 1155 for gaming, and before Ivy bridge was released, the Sandy Bridge-E platform was the best you could get.

I still reckon an overclocked 3770K would be enough to be honest. I do video editing and photo editing on my overclocked 2500K and it holds up fine.
