Hard Drive Issue

I have a hard drive that is failing, at POST it says S.M.A.R.T. bad status and I've already downloaded the diagnostic tool from the manufacturer and ran the test..the test only lasted a few seconds and sent a message that it failed. So I just received a new Seagate hard drive and I was wondering should I wait to let my current hard drive fail and kill over or should I immediately swap out hard drives and do the fresh install of Windows 7 Prof. Or should I simply add my new hard drive onto my computer and clone the current hard drive and then format the bad hard drive..and maybe send it back manufacturer to restore it to good condition (just an idea).
 
Do a fresh install of Windows on your new disk, then once you have Windows installed you can temporarily plug in your old drive, copy any data you need off the old drive and onto the new one, and then format the old drive and chuck it.
 
if you are experiencing a SMART failure, then that is your only option. Back up, destroy and trash it. Be sure that you destroy it. Don't worry about formatting it. After you remove all your files to another drive, take a hammer, pistol, axe, or anything that can cause blunt damage and beat the heck out of the drive. That is the best way to keep your data out of the hands of others.

Put in the microwave, then submerge it in water, then shoot it, then maybe beat it death with an axe. Basically just destroy it. Take the cover off it you can and destroy the platters. :D

that may be a little extreme. When I dispose of mine I am just going to hit it a couple times with a .45 ACP and be done with it. That kind of damage would not be recoverable.

But shooting it and drowning it is good fun! ;)
 
Well it is not about fun. It is about security. I shoot them 2 or 3 times until I am certain that it is permanently damaged. No one is getting anything from me. especially my bovine catapult. muhahaha

You can fun destroying stuff and permanently damaging it. :D

Hopefully the OP gets the idea. Basically just wreck the drive. I don't care how, bake it if you want or bury it at the bottom of the garden once you've killed it, but so long as it's dead and the data is unrecoverable, it's fine.
 
I do not see the point of having fun with it. If your having fun you have a very good chance of messing it up or skipping a step.
See also winding up the catapult before loading the cow on it. :)

Can you mess up destroying a hard drive or 'forget' to shoot it? ;)

Yeah possibly longer because once you've reinstalled Windows you need to reinstall everything else too and update it all and that takes time. Takes me about 3 hours to do a complete reinstall.

I guess I am a little more methodical than some people. I do everything in a step by step method. I could skip a step or miss something. Like loading the gun. or taking the safety off. or shouting "Live".

Seagate drives are pretty reliable I find. More reliable than other brands such as Toshiba and Hitachi.

Any hard drive will eventually fail, it's just the way things are, but you can take it from me that Seagate drives are fine. :) It should last you a long while.
 
I like Western Digital, Seagate and Samsung hard disk drives. Most models made by these manufacturers are pretty reliable in my experience.

The only exception to this is refurbished hard disk drives. I hear at least 50 percent of refurbished hard disk drives fail in the first year.

I don't mind buying refurbished or second hand stuff, but the one thing I always like to buy new are hard drives.
 
More important is put anti vibration mount for hard drive. It will reduced risk of fail hard drive. Hard drive create sample vibration that will take time until it is failing hard drive. No hard drive are perfect balance as you know it. I have it in my computer. My first Seagate External hard drive is 4 years old. Still work.
