hey CF users!

i want to buy/get an old computer to play with the hardware and look what i can do with it... but what do you recommend as minimum specs? i thought something like P4 and such thing but is that fast enough to have some fun with?:)

thanks for reading!:D

I am thinking of making homemade water cooling for a Athlon XP machine just for fun, dosent matter minimal specs if your just fooling with stuff.

I would check out ebay and see how P4s and Athlon FX/XP/64 are doing in price. Just grab something cheap. I was going to do something of the like with a old Pentium 3 or something to see what I could do. Might still do it.

okay and what graphics card can i install on a P4? is a 8800gts possible?:D

If the power supply is good enough and the board has a PCI Express x16 or 2.0 slot then yeah, but the P4 may bottleneck it in games depending on which P4 you get. I once used a 9600 GSO with a P4 HT machine, worked ok. :)

You ever used a P4 before? They're not great. :/ Even the later ones such as the HT were pretty slow. I had several P4 machines years ago.

hmm yeah... but when it runs rollercoaster tycoon 2 fine it is good!:)

once i had an old dell pc, i think it was a p4 or p3 and had 4gigs HDD and it was pretty fine for playing RC2:P

hahaa i found a core 2 duo @2,66Ghz that would be better!
with an Nvidia 7600gs grafix card:)(so it is upgradeable to 9600 or someting:))

that would be a good machine as long as it has a good power supply. And if it is PCIe x16 then yo ucan upgrade it all the way to a GTX 680 if you wanted to. But that would be a bottleneck. Maybe something like a GT520 or GT640 would be the best for it.

Wow I used to play Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 a lot, I've still got it and both the Soaked and Wild expansion packs somewhere. It used to lag like hell when you filled parks and then put it into night time mode, even on an i5 760 and a GTS 450, and I used to play it on cards such as 6200 GTs and 8400s. :/ I need to try it on my 5870 to see if it does the same! :D

The C2D machine sounds pretty good. Really for its age, the 7600 isn't a bad card. I'd only bother upgrading it if you want to play games on the PC. If it's just going to be to play around with, I wouldn't bother myself.

I remember trying to play that on a P4 2.8GHz, and an underpowered 8400 GS. That didn't work well.

Yeah I used a P4 HT and an 8400 GS and it lagged like heck. The game was released in 2004 but even hardware from 2010 can't run it without some lag. What did people do in 2004???

It was such a poorly coded game obviously. :/

.i love to see all your rct experiences!:) good childhood memories:D
I made some awesome parks on RCT3. :) I will find them all again, install RCT3 onto my main machine and then post some screenshots or upload some videos of them to YouTube for you.

I think I still have some of my parks, I may have lost them though. :(
