Noob question, but I'm looking to upgrade my current dual core cpu to quad or 8 core, but i was wondering if once i upgrade to a new cpu, will i need to buy another Windows 7 os?

Nope, wondows is attatched to the motherboard not the processor, and what is your motherboard and current processor? i can check and tell you what it will support up to

Upgrading a cpu should not be an issue. On the other hand a motherboard or video card is a trigger. Ive had to call Microsoft for this mentioned above only. Microsoft expired my key and gave me a new one.

No, you don't need to buy another copy of Windows. You may need to just reactivate it.

Do you have OEM or retail version?

We don't know if he have OEM or retail. So I'm asking OP. OEM is attached to motherboard. Retail does not attached to motherboard but a law state that can't installing windows 7 more than one computer. once buy new computer, must delete windows OS on old computer then installing new computer.

I have OEM. Thanks. I didn't know OEM and retail are different.

Just because you're plan to upgrade your CPU, you don't need buying new windows 7 OEM.

It should have code on your motherboard. Plus, I'm not sure if you really have AM3+ or not.

You have AMD cpu right?

Doesn't matter what he has because he's only swapping his CPU, NOT his motherboard.

No i have intel processor, but that leads me to another question, can i upgrade from intel cpu to amd cpu?

Also, is amd known as a good brand?

Intel and AMD are the only processor brands for desktops, they are completely sepperate and use different sockets, so they can't be changed.

go to cpuid.com and download cpu-z, then tell us the current processor and go to the mainboard tab and tell us the manufacturer and the model. You will be limited to an intel cpu but they are the better of the 2 currently, but if the computer is a few years old and on a dead (no longer used) socket, then amd could be a better cpu for that time, but you will be stuck so it doesn't matter.

This APPEARS to be the coorect motherboard page, if you could open the computer and look for an ASRock logo and maybe the model too to confirm that would help

http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=775Dual-VSTA

But it only supports dual cores up to the X6800, which would be a good upgrade but not a great cost efficient one. You can probably get a decent deal on a Core2 Duo E6600 or one of those, but you will have to update the bios which is a risky thing, if you mess up you could basically destroy the motherboard. But if you really want an upgrade then I'd consider a new computer or getting a new motherboard and processor and OS copy, right now you can use windows 8 for free though.

I only information OP just make sure he know different between OEM and retail. I know he is try upgrade CPU.

You can not change CPU from intel to AMD. They're different socket. Intel is LGA and AMD is PGA.

Check if you live near a microcenter, they got super deals on the 3570k and mobos

Hey thanks. I was just thinking this over and maybe i should wait. I feel like if i buy the quads now, it'll be outdated with 8 cores going mainstream. I'm going to wait a little longer. Maybe 2014 will be the right time. Thanks everyone for being helpful.
