Hi... I built my own computer not too long ago.. i installed everything correctly (at least i think i did) and it was working perfectly but now and then computer just freezes up... the computer seems to be still on but i cant do anything until I manually switch comp on and off... I really cant explain this any other way... there is no blue screen or error screen to tell me whats wrong... it just... freezes... I am really frustrated and worried that something is horribly wrong... if someone could tell me what i have to do to fix it... thanks

List your exact specs of system including motherboard, cpu, power supply video card, hdd, and ram. But first thing that comes to mind would be hard drive failing.

Mother Board - Z77-DS3H
CPU - Intel I5 3570K 3.4 GHZ
Power - OCZ 700W
Video Card - Sapphire HD 6950 2GB
HDD - Western Digital 1TB 64 MB Cache 6gb sata3
Ram - 8GB Cosair Vengeance (2x4gb) DDR3 1866MHZ

I havent overclocked anything apart from setting Ram's frequency down to 1600 MHZ

Looks like you got enough power to run everything. Can you hear any clicking from the hard drive when it freezes up? It's kinda hard to diagnose something like this without doing the basics. Testing the memory, HDD. Have you scanned for malware using malwarebytes?

errrm well first of all i assembled and installed everything YESTERDAY so unless my newly installed norton anti virus isnt working i really dont think its from a virus... and even everything freezes up the desk top seems to be still on until it just turns it off it self (take a bit of time tho) so i have no idea if there was a clicking sound......

What operating system are you using? If it is a Microsoft product, is the operating system a legal/legit copy? Was the hardware you purchased new or used?

How long does it take for the system to freeze? Is there anything that you are doing each time it has frozen? (Like downloading updates for the operating system, or installing a game, or playing a game, or coming out of sleep or hibernation)

A hard drive failing because of mechanical problems usually sound like some of the sounds here:
Hard Disk Failure Sounds

Listen for any of those sounds or anything unusual. Follow the rest of what Johnb35 recommended by testing the hard drive and the memory first.

And just because you got the computer running yesterday doesn't mean you didn't download something or visit a "shady" site and become infected. If you can keep the system running then consider following this:

I am using windows 7 64 bit and it is legit copy....
All the hardwares were new....
and the time it takes for the comp to freeze is completely random....at any time... (playing games surfing net or even when i just leave comp on without running a single thing)
and i dont hear any of those sounds =( ive scaned my whole comp with norton virus a few times to make sure...
ill go ahead and test hard drive and memory thanks for the fast reply and help guys

Run the tests, but it may be Monday until Johnb35 or I or anyone to get back to you since Sunday is Fathers Day and a lot of people will be with family and busy. So if it takes a little longer to get a reply this is the reason.

If you could install HDTune and run the benchmark test and save a copy of the results (click the "save screenshot" button) then attach the file on your next post, it would be helpful.

Also install HWMonitor to keep an eye on your temps since this might be a heat issue. If anything gets over 55C shut the computer down for at least an hour or more.

during test both cpu and HDD never went up above 35 degrees...
Can this be a motherboard problem?

hmm...i suggest try to reformat it,maybe there's an application you installed have virus or wrong installation

Hi,

I am not expertise in the softwares but i do recommend you to Format your whole desktop & try to install all the software as i think there is some software problem in your desktop.

hmm i havent done a thing but the problem seems to be gone.. well at least until now.... ill try the ram testing any way and see what happens....
thanks again guys

Your problem may or may not stay gone.

In the meantime, do your best to keep the computer "ON". At times take it to a heavy load for awhile (30-45 minutes of gaming or other intensive cad work or other) then let it rest for a few hours. Don't turn it off for about a week so that the system can break-in. Leaving it on can help the thermal paste set and fill microscopic gaps and for the components to warm, moisture to evaporate, electrical connections to "set", and for the OS to just run. This break-in period also gives you a chance to watch for "problems".

Keep checking the temperature program you have to get used to what is normal for your computer. And every now and then save the temperature data for future reference.

Thanks for the advice... ill keep an eye on my computer for a while and see if the same problem happens again...
Should i put it under a stress test using AIDA64 maybe?

Nah, you dont need to go crazy with it. Just try to keep it on and use it a little heavy at times, then let it cool. The main thing is to leave it on and keep an eye on the temps, listen for bad or unusual sounds, and make sure the system keeps running as it should.
