If you're doing stuff like that I'd recommend you overclock if you can!! Sometimes your system can become unstable, yes, but if you're careful and don't go too crazy you'll be fine.

That's true. I use prime95 for stability testing utility by overclock. Due to i3's limited, i can only overclock CPU up to 3.6 GHz with RAM at 1600 mhz max. I3 can't go overclock more than 1600 MHz.

Yeah because of limited memory controller but i still can overclock. With prime95 installed and test while i overclock in fully load. It is 30 C.

I probably will keep my 3820 stock, it will be 3x as powerful as my current phenom at least...so i dont really see the need

Of course you're on an original i3 though, sand bridge overclocking with the FSB is known to lead to some issues and ver unstable systems. But you may be able to change the turbo multipliers which would essentially overclock it while leaving you idle temps and power draw lower.

i was referring to you talking about overclocking your i3, but saying that he can't really overclock the 3820 anyways so it doesn't matter, because he said he'd probably keep it at stock.

The 3820 has an unlocked multiplier.

3820 does NOT have a unlocked multi it is a Non K series chip.

It is old i3-540. It is not sanity CPU.
No, that is only XXXXK CPU series that can unlocked multiplier. You can still overclock 3820 but it has limited multiplier, clock speed, BCLK speed and clock speed memory RAM.

Yea, but takes away the power saving modes...so i dont see much point, the cpu is fast as is...why do you need to clock it?

I don't need to overclocked either but I have too much RAM that's at 1.65 volt. So i have pretty limited overclock than overclocked i3 with RAM at lowest volt. Plus i3 have limited to 1600 MHz memory speed.

No, i7-3820 is not unlocked CPU but yes you can overclocking I7-3820 with some limited. Take look at link i posted. This is real unlocked CPU.

Every single result says the I7-3820 is partially unlocked meaning the multiplier is able to go up to 43x, unlike the fully locked processors. That's fact.

I can understand the multi yea, still doesnt mean its necessary to max the multi, i probably will leave stock still just due to the fact it is about 3x as powerful as my current chip.
