AMD and ARM

One thing I cannot understand is how the crowds are going crazy for the tablet computers like the iPad.

A laptop can do so much more than an iPad and it has more processing power. Only advantage I see with tablets over a laptop is portability (which is not much of an advantage). A lot of laptops are pretty portable.

I do not see it either. But I rekon it is the future no matter how unintelligent the reasonings are. I would always rather have a laptop than a tablet or netbook. The power of them is just not there.

part of it is convenience, they are easier to operate when just walking around or sitting there than to have to pull out a laptop, then use a crappy and un-comfortable track-pad or whatever and keyboard, compared to just simple taps and swipes. And casual games on them while just sitting there can be fun.

well, whatever happened to looking where your going rather than your tablet? And there are touchscreen laptops that will do the same thing better than the tablet.

Lets way it like this, the world is going to heck and we all have no say in how it is going. Apple spoils the world again.

I thought it was hilarious when that one lady fell into a fountain in that mall while messing her cellular phone while walking. I get annoyed at that. Watch where you are going rather than walking or driving when you mess with a cell phone. Pull over or sit down.

It's more then just "portability". I own a toshiba thrive tablet, and even though it's not as powerful as my laptop, it makes up for it in portability, weight(alot less), longer battery life(alot more), and easier interface. To be honest, I dont really use my laptop anymore, either im on my tablet or desktop. One day, the tablet will replace the laptop, when, I dont know. Eventually something will come along and replace the tablet as well, it's called evolution. Why you think every software/hardware developers out there are focusing on tablet innovation?

I still see no advantage with tablets. I will take all the processing power and advantages a laptop has over tablets. Battery life is increasing on many laptops now. The laptops I help service at my work last 3 to 4 hours on batteries now.

Sorry about this Stranglehold. I hijacked your thread on what AMD is doing into a completely different subject. It is connected with what the AMD technology is used for though.

Laptops are not yet powerful enough, they can barely run demanding software/games. Everyone uses there desktop(almost, the ones that own a desktop) for demanding software/games. So, what does that leave, internet surfing, watching/downloading vidoes, listen/downloading music, checking e-mail, online shopping, and the list keeps going and going. All that extra BS, except for the demanding software/games can be done on a tablet. Laptops have no where to go, if they get smaller, there considered a tablet, any bigger, a desktop.

I bet from a cold start, my tablet will boot and load my e-mail, watch a youtube vid, and listen to a song befor you even get firefox/explore open on your laptop.

You have faster and more accurate typing on a laptop, you have shortcuts for frequently executed commands and actions, you are able to do more on the laptop than you are on the tablet because you are not contrained to a mobile OS or weak performance (one or the other or both is present on a tablet).

I commute into work every day on the train, and apart from looking at the web, playing a game and once watching a video, I have never seen anyone use them for anything else. There are more people using laptops to send those emails early, do some work before they go in or some that was left over, as well as do everything that the tablet users do. I see a guy every day sit down, get his laptop out and start bashing Skyrim.

I maintain that touch phones are worthwhile, you get a larger screen in a smaller package and for something that isn't really designed to do a whole lot. With an interface that is only any good for point-and-click applications they are great, for doing anything other than pointing and clicking, you can not beat a mouse and keyboard.

Intel have broken into the smart phone market, if AMD do break in they are once again going to have too little, too late unless their chip is super powerful or it has incredible efficiency, which I honestly can't see with them competing against ARM and Intel who have both put huge amounts of time and research into their products and with the latter having a near monopoly and a hell of a lot of experience

Yes I can, it's called a touch screen tablet. It's alot easier to touch a screen with your finger, then it is to switch back in forth from keyboard to mouse.

Agree, they might be able to get in though

That must be real drag to move your hands a couple of inches down . I'm writing this on my phone and the time saved turning my phone on and opening the web browser has been lost in one single 3 line post. You cant beat a mouse and keyboard

I have to agree with aastii here. I use my iPhone a lot, but I have always found it faster to type on the comomputer. The interface between this and the ipad is the same, so going to a tablet is not going to make it any easier. The only real advantage is I can type special characters far easier like à or æ or ë without knowing the alt codes, but it really saves little time there too.
