E-Mail Virus/hack.

My mom has now gotten an E-Mail virus/hack that sends out sometimes a Viagra add or is listed as a address from the Dominican Republic. I have changed her password and secret question. I have run Malwarebytes and another malware program that found 9 tracking issues but listed them as low security. It sends everyone in her address book the previous add/address to click on. It has to be hacked as The E-Mails were sent out 2 times after I unplugged the computer from the phone line. Should I do something else as well? Thanks.

Its the password as the OP said that emails were sent out after the phone line was disconnected from the computer. Which is 99% of the time the password was hacked.

This is why I don't think it's just password related :).

It is password related, he said he already changed it and wanted to know if he should do anything else. He changed the password after the emails started going out.

Alright then, that's not how I understood his post, might come from the fact that English isn't my mother tongue :)

So far no new hacks but I told her no emails for a month to make sure that it's been taken care of.

She can still send emails. Just watch what goes out. If she didn't send it, then it's hacked again. No need for email withdrawal.

Time for a reinstall me thinks.

What is it with you always wanting users to reinstall their operating system when its not needed? Thousands of email passwords get hacked everyday. And if those thousands of people reinstall their system then they would have to do it again the following month.

I've had my hotmail and yahoo email accounts hacked I don't know how many times even though I don't use them anymore. Even my facebook and twitter account has been hacked.

So please stop telling users to reinstall the OS when its not needed.

Wow mega generic statement. Ok let's do it the John standard way shall we? Spend 2 hours to may be solve it when a 20 min reinstall is definite. You have your way John I have mine, no need to be rude.

Furthermore using my method I've never had one virus nor email hack issue ever. Unlike your good self it appears.

We have no idea how this issue began. Do we so a backup and reinstall is a fine way to go.

I can see sometimes do a reinstall on certain virus/malware infections but to do a reinstall on one where someone has hacked your password is really stupid.

Also, you may image your system and be back up in under 30 minutes but what about these people who don't know anything and would take them more than a day to get windows reloaded along with all their data and programs and get windows up to date?

Ya know, I never manage to think to do that. Next time I reload I'm making an image. Saves a hell of a lot of time.

20 minutes to have your system formatted, OS installed and have it back to the way you want it with all programs installed, settings how you like and everything in order. Do you just install Windows and use it for the internet and Solitaire?

To do a fresh install, get OS installed, all drivers up to date, frequently used programs installed and basic settings altered (UAC off, boot optimisation etc) takes me a minimum of a hour and that is before I have any settings in TS, games in Steam, server settings back in Filezilla, favourites and homepages in Opera and Chrome...to do all of that with all of the downloads on my 100Mb/s connection would take me a couple of days.

to assume any of the following:

OP has an image of their system as it was right before the issue happened
OP uses a very basic system with just their OS and the features it comes with
OP has all up to date drivers readily available

would be 100% conjecture and would be the only possible way that OP could do a 20 minute install.

What you are saying is the same as being in a war, having a lone enemy soldier in the middle of a populated city and so decide to nuke them and the entire city flattening it because "hey, they can always rebuild afterwards!!". It is complete overkill and ridiculous to even think it is the best solution here.

To OP, take the advice given and monitor what happens. If nothing is being sent out, it was a password issue that you have solved with the advice given. For precautionary measures, I would still do a full scan and follow the procedures given in the first reply by Punk
