Fx-4100 vs old Phenom 9600 BE


How much faster is the Fx-4100 than Phenom 9600 BE. (I turned the TLB patch off in the Phenom 9600 and never experienced any problems).

I'm not talking about CPU mark scores, because for me that isn't a complete indicator.

How do they compare in games, how do they compare in Encode with Handbrake, etc.

I'm well aware of bulldozers technological performance since I read articles and benchmarks since BD was released, but I believe it still looks great in terms of performance per dollar and that If Intel didn't have competition even an "I3" would see a 50 dollar price hike. That and I have mainly used AMD/Ati Products for the past 12 years.
 
you can get a 6100 for 20-30 more and an 8120 for another 20-30 more, so i'd go with one of this. It should be a lot better than the 9600, and if you buy a cheap aftermarket cooler (cooler master hyper 212 plus or evo) it should easily pass 4.5Ghz. Although the next generation of FX (piledriver) is coming out i think this quarter so it might be smart to wait, they look like they have taken a good step in the right direction with it so far.
 
I made the fx-4100 my hypothetical processor because most games only utilize 2-3 cores, and 4 if for just a select few?

I know for encoding, programs like handbrake really love the extra cores. Making the 8120/8150 really excellent encoding performance per dollar.

I can hold off for along while, so I'm hoping piledriver really improves the BD architecture.

This may go off topic alittle bit but what level of ram should I get. I decided 8GB would be the amount of ram, but should I do 1333mhz ram, 1600mhz ram with cas-8 timings, or the 1866mhz cas-8 timings? I've read a lot of benchmarks, but I do not know anyone who has stated the performance difference in real-life situations.
My current machine is Phenom 9600BE, with 4GB 1066mhz DDR2 kingston ram with 5-5-5-15 timings, Which at least benchmark wise is about the same as standard DDR3 1333 because slower timings.

you have to got a 64bit to go more then 4 gb ram, 8gb 1333mhz would be fair enough I think... Timings don't matter much.
 
8gb's is the sweet spot, cheap enough while still being plenty. We normally say 1600 because it's only a few bucks, but CAS9 is the norm, CAS8 is about 10 bucks more and i don't think it's worth it. If you look around most of the time, or for about a week each month, there's some 2133 on sale for about 50, and that would be great.

Really you won't notice much of a difference at all. I hate that i got to use some 1866 once, but i had it on a 2500k so i couldn't tell what was doing it, but that computer was the fastest and snappiest thing ever when i was just surfing the web, amazing the difference it made. It killed this computer with a 960t and 8gb 1333, just pulverized it, and this is on win8 which i think is supposed to be lighter and snappier, so really weird.

From what i've seen and from other people's comments, i do think a lower CAS will give better results, but 2133 for the 50 bucks would be better than 1600 CAS8 i think.
 
The FX Vishera doesnt goes into mass production sometime in the late 3rd. quarter. Probably hit stores around Oct.

Well of course I meant a 64bit OS :P

Currently I have 2 copies of windows 7 pro, and 1 copy of vista ultimate, and a copy of vista home premium if I count the OEM copy on my Lappy which of course is using one of my two copies of windows 7 now, leaving my vista copies unused. Gotta love being a college student who can get Windows Cheap. (all 64 bit)


Thanks Stanglehold that's good info to know. I've been trying to find the release quarter for piledriver for awhile now.
