Hi all,

I have these two laptops, Dell inspiron 1420 with t8300 cpu @2.4ghz, 4gb ram, Nvidia 8400m 128mb video ram and windows 7 64bits.

The other one is Dell XPS M1710 with t5??? cpu @2.0ghz, 3gb ram, nvidia 7900gs 256mb video ram and windows 7 32bits.

which one should play hd 1080p video better? which video card is stronger?
Thank you.

Hi paulcheung,

In response to your query, the Dell XPS M1710 plays it better because nvidia 7900gs is advanced version and this model has a better video RAM as well.

Please do let me know if you need any further help

Well you guys sure know what you are talking about. the M1710 in fact play the video ripped from blueray without problem, but the 8400m can't play it. is there any options for me to make the Inspiron 1420 play the video? the file is 16gb for 95 minutes video. is the 8400m upgradable?
Thanks.

i think the second is, but either should play 1080p perfectly fine.

NO Johnny, the 8400m can't play the file without freeze every couple seconds, I use vlc 2.01 player and also try media player classic. is there anymore video players I can try? Free ones?

I have the gateway 508ge desktop (over 10 years old) with pentium 4 540 cpu and 2 gb ram which I changed the video card to gt520, and it play it without any problems. so I guess the 8400m just don't have enough video ram and not powerful enough.
Any suggestion?
Thanks

It is plenty powerful. The only thing is to be sure that it is compatible with the decoder that it is using. The 8400m is a powerful little card, and will easily do video at 1920*1080. Its not a game, so you really don't have to worry much about vRAM.

Your main issue is your using ancient video cards to run a bluray disk.

It is not blueay disk, it is a file ripped from blueray, it is 16gb large mk? file for 95 minutes movie. So any suggestion which program or decoder to use to play it? it play the other bluerayrip ok like the one with 9gb file contain 2 hours movie.
Thanks.

If you rip it from a blueray, it still reads like a blueray. I think the 8400m should be capible of decoding HD signals, but not sure. What I would do is look up the 8400m GT online and see what codecs it supports, and be sure that your video file can use one of them codecs. If it does not then you will be running off your CPU and that would cause a bunch of issues I think.

Hi paulcheung,

In response to your query about the the video players, we would suggest you to download & try playing the same video from the list of below players, these players are free & best to stream the kind of video which we discussed about previously.

1. Divx

The Divx doesnot work, it lags bad. however the DAPlayer seem to work.
I have a feeling it might skip a frame or two sometime but I be able to watch the movie on it.
