Help finding laptop

I need assistance in finding a laptop to suite my needs. I don't mind buying a used laptop; my budget is $400. I prefer a professional laptop, like a thinkpad or latitude with a 14.1 inch screen. The programs i use most often are:
  1. Scrivener
  2. jDarkRoom
  3. Blurb Booksmart

I live in America.

Thanks for your help in this matter.

My brother thinks that professional would be better for me because I am going to use it for school and school tends to be rough on laptops. For example I dropped my current one in class one day cause I tripped over something.

Byte, I believe I can explain it well. She wants a professional laptop because of the quality and expandability.
(Shes my sister, so I am 99% sure on it, and she is using my money, so she is getting a professional lappy)

Anyway sis, got a few for you in in order of preference.

All of those will use the same Docing station and battery as the one I am getting.

This is the same more or less than the little Dell I have

This is a smaller version of the M90 (the big one) that I got. NOt pro, but same chassis, so great design.

Would it run DC Universe Online and Star Trek Online? (a couple of games I got from steam?) What about Skyrim? Would it run Skyrim? I don't have it but I want it. And I want to be able to play it when I get it. I also need the battery to last at least three hours.

okay, skyrim is going to need more than that. And if you would have said you wanted to play the games I could have saved a bit of ranting.

I will look and see what I can find. You may have to wait a payday and get something better.

The reason I never mentioned games is because my laptop sucks at them when they're not solitaire.

If i can get use a desktop to play skyrim how hard would t be to find one like this:
Batman Arkham Asylum:
System Requirements
OS: Vista/XP
Processor: 3Ghz Intel or AMD or any Dual Core
Memory: 1GB Ram(XP)/2GB Ram
Graphics: PCI Express SM3 NVidia 6600/ ATI 1300
DirectX®: 9
Hard Drive: 8GB free space
Sound: Any onboard sound card

BAtman Arkham City:
System Requirements
OS: Windows XP, Vista, 7
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or AMD Athlon X2 4800+
Memory: 2GB RAM
Hard Disk Space: 17 GB free hard drive space
Video Card: ATI 3850HD 512 MB or NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
DirectX®: 9.0c

okay. Now we are getting somewhere. If you can game on a desktop, I will let you use the parts I am dropping from my desktop, or maybe even let you use my desktop when I am not. That is not an issue. Just remember that the desktop option requires more wiring and ethernet into your room, which I can do for you.

your not looking good for the second one. All I am finding is http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Studio...ptops_Nov05&hash=item19d26b736d#ht_997wt_1270 and http://www.ebay.com/itm/FUJITSU-AH5...tops_Nov05&hash=item4ab82e163c#ht_6755wt_1270 and they are just barely going to scrape by if you overclock the graphics card which is dangerous.

Might want to use a desktop for that game too. Or you may have to get a job and up your budget to north of 800. those are pretty much your options.

this:
Batman Arkham Asylum:
System Requirements
Processor: 3Ghz Intel or AMD or any Dual Core
Graphics: PCI Express SM3 NVidia 6600/ ATI 1300
Neither will play this because of the processor speed.
BAtman Arkham City:
System Requirements
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or AMD Athlon X2 4800+
Video Card: ATI 3850HD 512 MB or NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
Neither will play this one mainly because of the graphics card, but you will definitely need a faster processor on the 830, which sucks donkey anyway.

according to that with the details set to low... (whatever that means) it will play arkham city... but not skyrim... it'll also play left 4 dead and half life 2 both in details high setting what ever that means...

There is a lot to consider, but I guess you can use it if you want. I do not trust that computer, but you are welcome to try. Just see what mum says, you might be able to split the difference.

and I will show you in COD what the details settings are.
