I need good anti-theft measures for a new laptop.

I'm looking to invest in a ~$1999 laptop. I'm moving out of the home and into a dorm soon, so I'm looking for a full-on desktop replacement to meet my needs.

The problem is that I don't trust people around that heavy of an investment. I'm afraid that my expensive new laptop could be stolen by either my dorm-mate, or someone else he knows, or someone on campus... etc, etc. My point is, I'm afraid of the thing being stolen.

I need some technology to apply to the thing to make it very hard to steal; Or at the very least, hard to get away with. GPS tracking, engraving, etcetc, some sort of physical lock... anything to deter theft.

Any help is appreciated.

I know you can get cables that attach to the laptop that you can attach to something solid (like the dorm heat register). As a former police officer, I would highly suggest you record the model and serial number and keep it in a safe place. I actually had an old Sony Walkman stolen and got it back because I could identify it by the serial number ("I had a scratch on the right corner" won't cut it). Oh, and keep your door closed and locked when you're not there (even if you just run across the hall). I used to work at a university and you wouldn't believe the times I heard someone say, "But I was only gone for a second". That's all it takes.

I think the new Intel CPU has a unique number that can be use for anti-thief that every cry about. so you can check it when you buy your new laptop. or just buy insurance for it.
Cheers.

That would be nice. They have it for cell phones and to locate like Motoblur for my Motrola Android 4G. Can locate or and delete all on it that might be private. Its free. Dont think laptop's though. Sounds easy enough though. Should be there from the laptop manufacture.

Right there. Especially the part about leaving the dorms locked at all times. I also worked for a university, as an RA and also dorm security, and I can't count the number of times people would leave their doors open to go to the bathrooms and have their stuff stolen.

And yes, get the serial numbers. Very important.

Maybe get some sort of trunk you can lock, and then lock said trunk to something else (like he said, a radiator or anything that can't be easily moved.) (One of my residents had his $3000 Mac pro tower locked to his bunkbed/loft with a bike chain)

Don't really know any software solutions, though. Sorry.
