Upgrading My PC

Guys,



I am going to upgrade my old desktop pc and purchase new hardware. At moment i will re-use 2 of my IDE hard drives and purchase converters for the new MOBO and re-use my current case and power supply. The new hardware are as follows:



1.Mobo

Given the information above would there be any compatibility issues, in particular with the mobo and cpu? Also, what are you thoughs on the second 32gb ram module i found, it is SO cheap it is very suspicious to me and i'm not sure if that would work on my system, what are you opions on this?
 
Well that processor won't work with that board for a start, and it's not the best processor in the world as far as price to performance goes. The i7 3770K is cheaper and faster than the 3820, and overclocks too, and it will work with that board you want. Really an i5 3570K would be enough though.

I'd recommend getting an ATX Z77 board if you go for this upgrade, Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H, can't really go wrong.

32GB of RAM, overkill, 8GB is enough really. RipJaws-X 1600MHz - that's good RAM.

Wouldn't buy a Zotac graphics card, EVGA, ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte for NVIDIA.

Try to buy from one store too.

32GB?! Is he building a superserver ;) Unless you are going to run like 20 virtual machines at once!
 
Ah right OK yeah 32GB would be fine then. But I use virtual machines just fine with 16GB of RipJaws-X 1648.

Get the 3770K for virtual machines, it's faster than the 3820 at stock anyway.
 
i'd get a name brand for the ram with a heatsink, shouldn't be too much more but will be more reliable. and unless you plan to play some games ifr you get the z77 mobo there is no need for the graphics card.

This motherboard in question, http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4144#sp, Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H, this supports both 2nd/3rd generation as it states 'L3 Cache...' right?

I do plan on using this machine to play games yes, i'll try to find another brand for my graphics card.

Jonnyp11, regarding the heatsink they usually come with the processors right? Are you suggesting that the one that come prepurchased with them are not of good quality?
 
Jonny's talking RAM heatsinks, get RipJaws-X RAM, they come with a heatsink.

If you want to overclock your CPU you'll need a better cooler/heatsink.

The boards for the 3820 are way more expensive than the boards for the 3770K though, so the 3770K works out cheaper in the long run.

For gaming you'll want something much better than what you've got there, try for a Radeon HD 6850 if you want something relatively cheap, I think it's about £100 or so.
 
Oh sorry, i thought you were talking about cpu heatsink. I was having trouble finding 2 * 16gb ram modules, i did notice more of the 4 * 8GB ram modules, do you think it would be cheaper to go with the later?

I don't plan to overclock the cpu, so it's fine. I'll take a look at the Radeon card you mentioned.
 
You can't get 16GB DIMMs and the 1155 boards for the 3770K only support up to 32GB anyway via 4x8.

I will also run Windows 7 Ult 64-bit edition, given the information above, do you think their will be any problems/issues when i upgrade my old pc with the new hardware? In particular the PSU and RAM?
 
The 6670 is ok but there is no point in 2gbs, that is only needed for high resolutions which it can barely go to and it cant go to the details that would use that much, its just a marketting scheme, i wouldnt go below a 6770 or better yet 7770 for gaming really, depends on the games really though, but. 7770 is about the best id put on a cx430 and i wouldnt put the 6770 on it, is less power efficient and weaker actually

Overclockers.co.uk has the 7770 for 100, not sure how much better it is or if it is worth the difference but the 7750 is good to.
 
If this is going to be a server with VM's might be worth investing in a xeon/workstationboard/ecc ram. but thats my two cents.

Not really, I run VMs perfectly on in the rig in my signature and Dad runs them even better with his 3770, UD5H, 32GB RipJaws-X etc. A Xeon and a workstation board would just be a waste of money.

That RAM would work but the RipJaws-X has faster timings - CAS-9 vs CAS-10, the lower the CAS the better. The only disadvantage with RipJawsX is the height of the DIMMs.

You don't need the Xeon and stuff he was suggesting, see my post below his.
 
One thing that i'm curious is that since i'm using 2 of my IDE drives, i've read that converters are not very reliable. I personally would like to not have to buy 2 extra SATA drives as it will cost me money. At the same time as i'm building this machine i would have to hate to troubleshoot a problem which could end up being that my converters are fault. Does anybody know if there are any good mobos that still have IDE ports for the spec i want keeping in mind that i plan to purchase a 3rd gen processor chip
