Trying to update Windows 2000

Hello all, need some help. I just finished a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro on a P4 2.8/800FSB, 2GB ram, 60GB, 32MB ATI, Intel D875PBZ. I've got the motherboard driver's installed, HWinfo32, WinRaR and that's it right now. I also took and installed Service Pack 4, the roll-up update, IE6 service pack 1 and am having troubles with the Windows Update website.

It keeps telling me there is a problem and can't continue. I have done about 50 google searches and have tried everything these sites have suggest but still nothing. I've reinstalled the activex. I just want to have the system as much update as I can. I know that support ended in 2010, but it would be nice to have the system up to date.

And I am running Windows 2000 on this system because I have lots of Win XP boxes, a couple 98 boxes, a ME box, a 2000 server box, a couple Win 7 boxes. Actually I have 19 computers right now from a 486 overdrive to a Core i5.

All your suggestions and help are greatly appreciated.

K, tried that and still no luck. I guess I could try and do a reinstall of the entire OS and see if that does anything.....

Considering that MS has no more support for this Windows 2000, I would guess they also shut down the update web site for it.

Dw, I get this problem too. Does it give out an error code like error:003572875x3 or whatever?

Just make sure you're up to date with IE 6 then try running Windows Update.

well did a complete reinstall. Installed service pack 4, the rollup, ie6, etc.... and still the same no windows update. Oh well, this one won't be hooked up to the internet anyways.

I am beginning to suspect we are out of luck regarding Windows Update on a Win 2000 machine. Your issue has caused me a lot of work! I fired up my Win 2000 machine and found that I had the same issue with Windows Update. I spent a few hours trying everything I could think of and couldn't get my Win 2000 machine to work with the updates site either. Mine isn't a new install or anything and had been working a few months ago. I hadn't made any changes to it in that time.

Looks like a good site, I didn't come across that one in my searches. I don't have time to try it today but maybe will in the next few days. Let me know how it works out for you.

Yup, the installs seem to work fine. I just did the 2 main ones. It will be nice when the big service pack is done. Will surely help those who want to still run this old OS!
