looking to build a powerful desktop for work

hey all,

i don't know much about actual hardware, even though i'm majoring in computer science, i'm more interested in programming aspect so forgive my ignorance.

i work for a research center where we perform intensive computations that require multiple processors but usually not as much ram. we're actually supposed to have some kind of massively parallel CPU "cluster" but it won't arrive for maybe 2 years.

right now i'm running on a 16gb RAM, quad core (not sure what kind of processor) but i think it's at least 3ghz per processor. my computations still take all night.

i'm looking to build something in the 2-3k $ range. i also want as many processors as possible because the more parallel my system is the faster my particular type of computation will happen.

so yeah if someone has a good idea for what i should do, built it myself or buy the parts separately and assemble them? i've never put together a computer but i doubt its that hard.

so yeah, something between 2 and 3 thousand, as parallel as i can get it. thanks!

edit oh yeah it needs to have linux also don't know if that matters for the hardware.

edit #2 sorry about this, it also needs a decent graphics card as we do alot of scientific visualization as well (although it doesn't have to be top of the line like the processor).

By the sound of what you are asking, I would sugest you look at the business section of building rather the the home use.
This site may have what you need or supply you with guidelines. If you click on the business section, it may help you.

I would take a look at what Terry linked as well.
But I can recommend the GTX 670, if your budget is 2-3k$. It's around 400$ and it performs ~5% less than the GTX 680, which is ~525$.
It has a lot of CUDA cores, which I assume (I'm not a computer science major :D) is what you're looking for.
As for Linux, if you ask me it's the most compatible OS I've ever encountered, so you should be fine there.

Change the CPU to a 3930K, get an aftermarket cooler or a liquid cooling setup and overclock it - get 32GB of RAM if your programs need it. NVIDIA graphics cards are better for the stuff you need than AMD ones are - get the GTX 680 or even the 690.

amd ones have more power, but he said that he didn't need that more then the processor...

Where do you live? I'll take a look for you.

And he's talking about processors, not graphics cards...

i live in quebec canada.

i checked out your build. looks pretty tight (like i know) but the processor link just took me to the homepage. i assume all these parts will go together on the motherboard? lol. don't want to order something and then have a bunch of incompatible parts...but i guess you probably know that or you wouldn't have recommended them.

The motherboard is a 2011 socket, it's made for that cpu. The rest of the build will be totally compatible with this board. How much do you need graphics performance? I think it would be enough with this card...
Add this to your build, a better cooler then the stock one will be needed: cooler
