hp pavilon a410e desktop won't run 2 sticks of ram

I have an old hp pavilion a410e that won't take a second stick of ram, and it only has two slots. I've had this computer forever, and gave it to my deaf aunt (who had never used a computer before at the age of 40) and she picked up pretty quickly. (the main reason I say this is I don't always have access to the computer, I know most details, but specifics I can't get)

A few years ago it started having random blue screens, so I did a lot of googling, and one person said that it was a bad stick of ram, sure enough, I pulled out one of the sticks of ram, and it never had the issue again.

Well the remaining stick was only 512mb so I decided I would get another stick of ram, started fine, then BSOD. So I just think the sticks must not be compatible, so I sell the one I bought on amazon, and buy two matching sticks. Put them in, and same problem. taking one stick out always solves the problem. every stick I bought worked by itself, but when paired with another, it randomly died. Is it possible a slot would just randomly die like that.

The only size sticks I tried putting in it were 512mb, and its ddr pc2700.

HP was very picky on what memory they liked. It must be the same brand and timings of memory if you use more than one stick. Yes, its very possible that there may be a bad memory slot.

thanks, I might try one more time, and make sure they are exactly the same.
