How To: Liquid Cooling 101

I read a guide somewhere regarding the Ivy Bridge chipset that involved prying apart the processor itself and replacing its internal TIM. Is that a viable option for all processors? Is it a good idea to do that/will it be helpful? I read that it decreases temps by up to 20 degrees.

This is almost another topic and there are already several posts on this forum on it, but yes, replacing thermal paste on CPU cooler is easy but needs to be done in a certain way.

Replacing the the paste on the outside yes, but prying the heatspreader off (as that's what I think they were asking about) is pretty much always a bad idea. The last time I saw someone try to take the headspreader off they destroyed the CPU.

Yes, you're right. Thats what I was trying to say. I've been reading things about replacing the heatspreader, and how it would make a huge difference in temps for Ivy Bridge.

I've heard anywhere from no difference to 10 degrees if you are able to do it. As I said before, removing the heatspreader isn't trivial but at least with Ivy Bridge you don't have to worry about the lid being soldered down..

Yeah sorry, i mis-read. I agree with Cromwell, pretty risky. The compromise is to lap your cpu.
