Strange problem probably with 460gtx

Ok i bought corsair CX500, but it didnt really change anything the problem still occurs while playing games. Also sometimes when i power up my computer when it goes to desktop it turns all white and it's like showing the parts of my desktop when i move mouse or some opened window around.

Does it mean there is something wrong with my graphic card?

Must be a faulty card then. Can you RMA your card? Does it have warranty left?

Did you ever get MSI afterburner? I actually suggest you try increasing the voltage on the card and/or underclocking to see if it helps.

Probably, but this is also a complete case study for why shit power supplies are such false economics. Only once you have eliminated the hardware issues should you attempt to overvolt anything. The PSU may have done some damage as it failed. Sorry michal, but at this point there are really only a few options left. In probability order:

  • Overclocks or damaged hardware
  • Damaged VRAM - either by heat or voltage fluctuations (probably both)
  • Damaged motherboard or CPU or RAM - either by heat, or voltage fluctuations.
  • Dodgy cable (HDMI or DVI).

First things first (eliminate the graphics card as the issue):

  1. Disable ALL overclocks (where applicable).
  2. Replace the VGA cable - doesn't matter what type, just swap it for another. Can be the old blue VGA. - See if this fixes it - if it does great; if not
  3. Try the graphics card in another computer (consider using your new PSU to power it). If it works fine, then you know its not the graphics card. btw there is no point testing it on a computer with a cheap or low powered PSU. If it works in another computer, you know its something else; if this is the case
  4. Ensure there is no dust or other build up in fans (including the graphics card).

If above you find out the graphics card or cable is faulty, this doesn't mean that you should stop there. The failing PSU could've damaged other hardware easily and it is important to check. The following will take an hour or so, but I would continue and test (all free):

  5. Reinstall the graphics drivers if possible. Install them as a 'clean install'. This fixed a similar issue recently.
  6. Download Speedfan and record temps of the CPU and GPU while running Heaven Benchmark (closest workload to BF3).

If the CPU is running hot (post temps if unsure), reseat and reapply thermal paste on CPU

If the GPU is running hot, make sure you have the fan cranked up and its dust free.

  7. Test RAM using Win Vista/Win 7 memory testing (instructions below), or Memtest (burn file to CD/DVD and boot from it) - if you get errors, its probably faulty RAM.

To test the RAM using Windows (if you have XP use Memtest):
    • Open the Start menu.
    • In the Start Menu search box, type mdsched and press Enter.
    • Click on Restart now and check for problems option.
    • The computer will now restart, and you will see this screen next. NOTE: Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool will run the Standard test by default.
    • When the test is finished running, it will automatically restart the computer.

Try all of the above. This should exclude some possibilities. Where the GPU and RAM are proven good, the drivers are up to date (clean install), and the PSU is replaced with the GPU temps and CPU temps being satisfactory, then really can only be the motherboard.

A long shot, you could also ensure BIOS settings are set correctly (e.g. RAM voltage, speed, Qfan settings etc) - also make sure you have the latest BIOS.

Cheers

Ok, now i have this problem also while playing League of Legends (sometimes it freezes after like 2 mins.) which never happend before. I also formatted my computer so i had to reinstall all drivers but it didnt help. I dont think i have anything overclocked. I will try swapping VGA cable now, (its the one connected to monitor right?)

I also cleaned fans and tried Heaven Benchmark for like 30 mins

And got these temperatures:

GPU: 77C
System: 41C
CPU: 46C
AUX: 47C
HD0: 40C
Core 0: 55C
Core 1: 47C
Core 2: 49C
Core 3: 50C

Ok guys so i bought new PSU like i said (corsair CX500). And when the problem still occured my graphic card got replaced for new gtx 460, but the funny thing is it didnt change anything, all games i play are still crashing + artifacts are showing up.
When i sent may gtx 460 for replacement i was playing on gts 8600 and everything was fine i didnt get a single crash. Does it mean that my gtx 460 isnt compatible to my system or what? Should i buy new graphic card?

Ofcourse i tried different drivers and used driver sweeper

There is a website, I cant remember what it is called, but it tells you what is compatible!

What exactly is your setup? What CPU, motherboard, ram?

I've never seen a CPU or ram cause artifacting, usually just crashes. So I'm thinking at this point your motherboard simply doesn't like the gtx460. If you have an older board, like a socket 775 board, it's actually kinda likely. Make sure the board has the latest Bios installed, but most of the time it doesn't help anyway.

Edit- ok I re-read the thread and you said before that you used it for 3 months no problem and then you started getting the issues. This is totally wierd and makes no sense at all other than a faulty card. But I'd still like to know your setup right now CPU motherboard ram.

CPUID: producent -> GenuineIntel
CPUID: name -> Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9505 @ 2.83GHz

processor type -> 2x Intel Pentium III Xeon, 2833 MHz (9 x 315)

Now thats what everest says about motherboard ->

Field Value
Motherboard Properties
Motherboard ID 63-191-0000010-00101111-052011-INTEL$AS153191_G31M-S BIOS P2.00
Motherboard Name Unknown

Front Side Bus Properties
Bus Type Intel AGTL+
Bus Width 64-bit
Real Clock 315 MHz
Effective Clock 315 MHz

Ok i found out that motherboard is probably: ASRock - G31M-S

Well I think thats your problem. The motherboard is too old, and also it's only running at PCIe 1.0 speeds not 2.0 which bottlenecks the gtx460 too. A motherboard upgrade would definitely be in order here.

I would also get a board that uses DDR3 ram and upgrade your ram too. CPU is still decent, even at todays standards.

But are you sure that motherboard is causing all these crashes they occur becouse mobo has only 1x PCI 16 slot? I just don't want to waste my money if it doesnt solve the problem :(

Well, even if it isn't your problem (but it is likely) you are really bottlenecking the gtx460 with the 1.0 x16 slot so with a newer board and 2.0 x16 slot your 460 will no longer be bottlenecked.

How about following step by step what i posted before huh? Better than a scatter gun approach. I wrote it in an order for a purpose.

Ok it seems its really a motherboard problem than, after checking everything. Could you suggest some motherboards and does it really have to be 2x PCI-E 16. Becouse its really hard to come by and they seem very expensive + i read somewhere that GTX 460 doesnt neceserly require 2x PCI-E 16.

I'm not saying it requires TWO x16 slots, it requires a x16 2.0 slot which any new board will have just about.
