FPS drops by half until I alt-tab out

Hi,

when I play games like diablo 3, there are random times when my FPS just reduces in half. It clears up until I alt tab out, and return to the game. Anyone know why this happens?

Specs are GTX 670 and i5-3570K @ 4300MHZ

Thanks!

Your specs are more than ok for that game. Two things come to mind.

1. Crashing/faulty driver. Download latest driver for your system. Uninstall the old one, restart the computer, install new driver, restart computer again and play to check.

2. There is not enough cooling in your case. GPU overheats, throttles down the cores, can even cause the driver to crush. When you alt + tab to the desktop, workload is smaller, less heat is produced, therefore there is less heat. Driver / system comes back to normal quickly and when you come back to the game, you can play like normal, for the time being. To check, open the side of your case, preferably direct some external source of cool air (like a fan), and see if the problem persists.

Come back tho say how you got on :)

Thanks,

1. I did that already, not fixing the problem, but rather causing the problem? (I had to troubleshoot by reinstalling my driver before and after that, i've been getting this issue)

2. It happens at such a random occurance. For example, I could play 1 hour just fine, but suddenly, for the next 5 minutes, it'll keep lagging. Keep in mind that my GPU temperature doesn't go beyond 64C even when D3 is on.

*Howevr, my cable management within the case isn't that great I must admit....

Well, your case doesn't have all that much airflow either. But, if your GPU never goes beyond 64C then it's not the temperature that's causing the driver to fail. Have you try rolling back to the old driver and see if it works? Sometimes new drivers don't work with all configurations, and then it's just to wait for a next update to come around. I found that the latest driver is not always the most stable one (although this depends on the configuration of your PC, so now real way to tell).

I tried something else, and seems to be working for the time being...

I went to the nvidia control panel and set the power management to maximum or whatever. As of now, it seems to be working fine.

Temperature still at 64C under load
