Very Strange Network Setup

So I'm helping my mother out who is a manager at a medical office, now I am having a hard time figuring out how they have their network setup.

Picture this scenario. You have two rooms.

In room one: you have a cable modem which is attached via Ethernet cable to a wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) this router has one computer attached to it and is broadcasting a wireless signal. This router can successfully connect to the internet.

In room two: you have a router (Linksys WRT54G) not connected to a modem at all. That port is empty. In the four lan ports you have 3 computers and 1 printer connected. I believe it is also broadcasting a wireless signal with the exact same settings as the router in room one. This router can also successfully connect to the internet.

Both routers appear to have identical settings and are using the default linksys firmware.

Other notes: The computer in room one can see all the computers connected to the router in room two.

If someone can please tell me how this is possible that would be absolutely wonderful as the router in room 2 needs to be replaced because port 4 is not functioning properly.

I'd assume that the second router is configured as an access point, taking the signal from router 1 and expanding it from router 2, forming one large network.

Why not just swap the two routers since only one computer is connected to the first router?
 
You may just have to change the settings a bit so one is the primary router and the other is the access point.
 
I hope you have some good insurance.

I wouldnt touch anything to do with the medical trade unless it was from scratch.

Although its your mother, has she remembered about that bit of equipment in the cupboard that keeps people alive? :)

Don't worry I have been helping this medical office out a lot lately including setting up a backup and all that good stuff. The problem with the place is that when I first got there everything was set up in a very make shift way. I had loads of connections and devices that where either not connected to anything or not being used at all. Since then I've cleaned it up a bit and have figured out most of their problems. I'm really not so big on networking though so I have a hard time figuring how they have certain things set up.
