I have a converter. It says on the package: ATX P4 4-Pin male to EPS 8-pin female 6-inch long. My question is this: Can this be used backwards---EPS 8-pin female to ATX 4-Pin male? I want to convert down.

I don't see why not, however typically you would then need an 8-pin male to a 4-pin female.

It will plug into the port, but will the current flow in the right direction?

Yes. The port will only provide the power to the 4 pin side though. So you have a limit of power provided. But that is not an issue on boards with only the P4 connector.

Okay. So what's a P4? It can't be a "Pentium" 4.

Rosewill makes these---male to female, EPS-ATX, 8 pin to 4 pin, I find , after some looking around. They're cheap. Do you suggest I buy one?

Stick the 8 pin in the four and the four pin in the eight?

take the EPS 8pin from the power supply and connect it to eth P4 4pin plug on your board.
