the ASUS advantage

As far as I can see, one advantage ASUS Motherboards have over Gigabyte Motherboards is that you can put an ASUS MB to sleep and the Gigabyte MB just turns off. Unless somebody can tell me how to adjust the settings in the BIOS Setup. Gigabyte MBs are certainly sturdier, better built. I have a GA-880GM-USB3 and a M4A785TD-M EVO.

Your gigabyte board supports S1 and S3 sleep states, you cna see which is configured in the BIOS under power management with the ACPI suspend type option.

LOL. Seriously? First of all, you are comparing only 1 board against one. And the gigabyte does sleep. Don't know your problem. How about the Gigabyte advantage: Asus's rma service sucks!

I can see in the BIOS Setup, the MB is configured for S3(STR), I entered this option, but nothing happened---no blinking light, did not wake up when I pressed Enter. It is definitely not asleep now, but off. Can you suggest a better procedure than entering S3(STR)in the BIOS Setup? Am I exiting the Setup wrong, with F10?

O/s

sleep states can not be entered from the BIOS. They are accessed via the operating system.
I used O/S to access the settings for putting the computer to sleep. I pushed the right buttons. When I shut it down, it turned off. It didn't go to sleep. The PWR button light wasn't flashing. I had to push the PWR button to get it to start up again. Can I do anything else? Anything more?

Are you going to sleep or are you shutting it down? They are two seperate things. and what OS are you using? Windows I assume? I am not sure of the newer ones as I have never needed to use sleep in my desktop (far faster to just just down when needing a power saving state). ON XP use hibernate and/or Stand by mode to enter sleep.

When you use standby on a gigabyte motherboard, it will look as though it turned off. But then you simply tap a keyboard button and it will wake up.

I am using Windows 7 64 bit. I don't have to put the computer to sleep. I would like to, but I don't need to. It's a faster boot up when the computer is asleep than when I shut it down.

I know I can tape a key to rev up from sleep on an ASUS MB. This doesn't work on the Gigabyte. It's either online or shut down. I can't put it to sleep. I have set the board to the proper settings in Power Options, but it doesn't obey when I try to put it to sleep.

On some systems S3 does appear to be off, however pressing the power button if the keyboard doesn't work will wake it up.

On my system there's a setting in the BIOS to make the computer resume when you press a key on the keyboard, you should look for that.

I personally like S3 mode because the computer doesn't ever wake up on its own, which I had problems with in S1 mode.

It could just be a corrupt install of windows 7. I let my system go to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. And then all I have to do is move the mouse and it wakes up.

I'll try fixing the setting for that and then leave it inactive. All this seems to be pretty hit or miss.

I can automatically turn off the display but the computer doesn't seem to want to go to sleep. I'll have to give it a pill or something.
