utorrent slowing things down but no traffic

When I turn on utorrent if all the torrents are paused everything is fine, but if I resume, even though I'm not seeding anything and am not receiving any data on the one torrent I'm downloading my internet connection becomes very slow.

It's not that sites load slowly, it's it takes a long time for them to start loading. It will be stuck on "waiting for x" and then "connected to x", and then when it finally goes through it downloads the page quickly, but the stuff before takes a long time.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

We can't help you unless you are downloading legal, non-copyright material. If you aren't, then we can't say anything.

uTorrent --> Options --> Setup Guide --> Run Tests

Tell us if there are any issues like ports that need forwarding, etc...

A simple solution might be to navigate through the options and change the max bandwidth for the entire program. I'm on a hella slow 2MB/s Download connection, so I limit uTorrent to 1MB/s down and 750MB/s up when I'm using the computer.

I think this is like a trademark for the torrent program. Everyone i've used, did the same thing. I think that the permanent search for trackers when he doesn't have any makes it move slow.

It's because uTorrent is downloading the torrents, it just doesn't show it yet. It's probably collecting information.

It's not that, because however long I keep it open it never starts downloading that torrent

Are you talking about utorrent or torrent clients in general?

I did the tests - the port is forwarded, but whenever I do the bandwidth test whichever server I choose the connection times out, which is consistent with what is happening in my browser. Probably if there was no setting to stop trying to connect after a certain amount of time and give the "timed out" message, it would eventually connect.

This is odd, because wouldn't utorrent suspend it's downloading and any other activity that uses my bandwidth to do the bandwidth test and get an accurate reading?

Re: the thing with limiting the bandwidth usage - that's not the issue, because nothing is being downloaded or uploaded.

The not starting the torrent problem is fixed in the next version of uTorrent, for now you have to start it manually by selecting it in the list and clicking the play button on the toolbar.

As I said, it's most likely gathering information the whole time, because magnet links are like that.

Buy a physical copy of whatever you are trying to get or a digital distribution. Every software vendor and digital arts producer has a way of distributing their wares outside of torrents.

May I point you all to the forum rules

The use of torrent trackers or p2p software to obtain copyrighted material... is not allowed, whether or not you believe or suggest it's for legal use.

Aside from the help given up to this point, I would encourage users to leave this thread alone now and for OP to take the advice given at the start of this post

He could have been downloading Linux distributions, I don't see how this is against forum rules.
