hi all i am trying to remove vista and install xp pro sp3 on TOSHIBA EQUIUM A200-1VO on boot up i changed it to boot from the cd, put in disk,. runs but then says "can't find any hard drives". any help would be greatly appreciated

Is this a laptop? If so, then try going into the bios and changing the sata operation from ahci to IDE/compatibility and try reinstalling XP.

you can not change the ACHI setting on most Toshiba and HP laptops. They lock it down to where all you can change is basically the time and date, and that is it.

YOu will need to know what chipset you have so you can slipstream the SATA drivers.

Whats the make and model of your laptop? If there is no such option then you will be forced to slipstream the sata controller driver into a new XP install cd.

However, are you sure you will be able to find XP drivers for this model? What processor and how much memory is in it? You would be better off installing windows 7.

its a equium a200-1vo model no psaf5e-002005ks as you say it might be better to install win 7,i only thought of xp because i have a genuine disk, are you saying win 7 would install easier and has all the drivers needed

Yes, windows 7 would be easier to install and it would have most of the drivers already installed. And we could help you install the rest that weren't.

hi johnb35 i got a copy of win 7 now, tried to install it but it now says there is not enough space to install ? looking at the "e" drive it is 54.5 with 51.9 free,"c"[vista] drive is 55.8gb with 13.8gb any ideas what might wrong.

i have deleted existing partition and made a new one with 4.83gb then copied win 7 ultimate 32bit into it,when i click on it , it says "unable to load windows 7 ultimate-32 bit +rar. not enough storage is available to process this command" win 7 ultimate is 3.48gb so don't see what i am doing wrong.

your problem being you need at least 18GB to install windows 7.

And it sounds like you are using a pirated version. It should be .iso if you are using a legal version, not .rar

Yep, sounds like you have downloaded windows 7 off the web and trying to install it. You need to buy your own copy of windows 7 with a legit license. You will need to create a partition of at least 60 gb or so to install 7 on. You really don't want anything smaller as you may run out of room.
