Has AMD had its day

well my phenom 1090t cpu cost £133 about a year ago which according to google is about $199, the bulldozer is apparently a massive disappointment, and i don't see a lot else, although i have been wondering about the amd trinity, i don't know if it's any good, i might have a look into it now

trinity is piledriver, as in the next gen of fx, and is only a little better than llano which was a 32nm athlon iirc

That was my choice for upgrading but from what i could tell it was not going to be worth it for me to go from a 955 to a 1090T in terms of money, so i just saved money and went with a intel platform. Still have to figure out what to do with the old motherboard and CPU.

Since I bought a new case for mine, as I upgrade my computer, I am putting my old parts in that case, I will be getting a new psu soon, so that will go in, then I want more Ram, which will make my existing obsolete, so that will go in, I already have a dvd drive and hdd, then all I need is to either fix the problem with the existing motherboard/cpu, or get a new set and I will then I will sell that one, I think I will try and do that with any upgrades to try and get some of my money back, I could also do with another graphics card so I can put that in as well

while it may not be a worth-while upgrade, it does show progress in the right direction. IIRC, at similar or the same clocks, piledriver was beating the llanos which are athlon II's on a shrunken die, and trinity uses an early revision of piledriver, so piledriver may truly be a winner compared to phenom II, but it is a few years late to save AMD from loosing the performance sector. It will still be a good bit behind Intel and the only thing saving them, as with FX, will be fanboys and overclocking enthusiasts who care more about a big number than actual performance.

If the prices are like the ones now, it should be a great deal. Amd drops his prices early like we know...

according to that it will come out later this month, be 7% faster for both IPC and clock speed, and 15% more efficient, which all together is a really good performance increase if that hold true. If i can make a 100 or 2 from work or christmas i might sell this for a bit less than i want but grab a 6200 (pretty sure that's what it's supposed to be, whatever the piledriver 6 series is) and do a new build.

Damn, just had a look at this, and it looks tempting, unfortunately I have an am3 motherboard, I heard the bulldozers might work with a possible bios update on am3, is this true and would the same be true for this?

won't work, AM3+ has 2 more pins in the socket than AM3 does. And whole point of the thread was next build wasn't it, although if you had an AM3+ that would'a been nice.

Saw some benches, pretty bad floating point builded apps/benchmarks still are lags for the new fx series...

You are right, the intention of te thread was next build, but if it was compatible I might have been tempted to upgrade early, I know that's probably a bit silly with only having this cpu for a bout a year, probably a good thing really, there are so many things that warrant upgrading that are more important than the cpu at the minute

AM3+ processors will fit AM3 board/sockets. But the problem is Asus and just a few others offered bios updates for there AM3 boards. Gigabyte didnt update any.

namely the crappy brand psu and the uber low end gpu

Yeah, they are the next 2 upgrades I am looking at, probably won't bother with the cpu cooler for a while as the new case had got my temps down nicely and I don't plan to overclock

i'm happy with amd, i'm running the fx4170-stock cooler,it's quick and doesn't run that hot, intel in canada is over double the price of amd,i'd rather blow up a $106.00 processor than a $500.00 one.

Whoa?! Blow up a CPU?! I have heard of frying a CPU with massive (like, so crazy most boards don't allow it), but blowing up a CPU?! Show me how! A i3 is the same price btw and is better. A i5 is soluble the price, yes, but worth it by far.

I think he means burning it out.

Personally, I will never like AMD. I personally don't use their CPUs, and the Graphics don't work for me, but I do forsee buying a 7970 just to game on, and of coarse to be locked into the sucktastic windows OS group by the card. :(

I know, I was just kidding. Why buy a 7970 if you want a 680? Is their a specific reason.

well amd has to have something good, so at best ,in colder climates my system will heat one room and save on the gas bill.
Get a 480, OC and overvolt till it artifacts then back down. Get a 2600k and run it folding 24/7 @ 4.7GHz. You will have a nice heater. As in raises room temp with AC on in both windows.

Price. Can get a 7970 (680 power) for $399. Can not barely get a 670 for that price.
