Upgrade or New PC?

Hello there,

I am currently using this PC for work and occasionaly some gaming (Mainly WoW, D3 and GW2). The problem I have is that it keeps freezing on random times like it has memory issues, especially while using various browsers (even when I only have them open and NOTHING else).

Mainboard : ASRock P55M Pro
Chipset : Intel P55
Processor : Intel Core i5 750 @ 2666 MHz
Physical Memory : 12288 KB
Video Card : ATI Radeon HD 5670
Hard Disk : Seagate ST3250318AS ATA Device (250GB)
Hard Disk : Seagate ST3250318AS ATA Device (250GB)
CD-Rom Drive : DTSOFT Virtual CdRom Device
CD-Rom Drive : DTSOFT Virtual CdRom Device
Monitor Type : Samsung SMT23A350 - 23 inches
Monitor Type : Samsung SMT23A350 - 23 inches
Network Card : Realtek Semiconductor RTL8139/810x Fast Ethernet Adapter
FAN & Cooling: Cooler Master RS-520
Operating System : Windows 7 Ultimate Professional Media Center 6.01.7600 (64-bit)
DirectX : Version 11.00
Windows Performance Index : 5.9 on 7.9

Because of the work I do, I keep a LOT of programs open at the same time, for example FF with 50+ tabs, Safari with 30+ tabs, Thunderbird, Skype x 2, MSN x 3, ~3 doc files, ~2 excel files while I run on the background Nod32 Antivirus 5, Comodo Firewall, Perfect Disk, Actual Multiple Monitors (currently using two monitors), sidebar with some basic PC info + extras and I have modified the desktop using Stardock Fences + Stardock ObjectDock. Hopefully I didn't forget anything there.

I was thinking of either upgrading this PC or make a new one from scratch (although the thought of moving all my work + setup from this one to the new one makes me a bit nervous..).

I would like help with the whole build, money is NOT an issue at this moment BUT I have a few concerns which are:
- Should I go with SSD for Windows + a few main programs (no idea which ones though)
- I am thinking of getting a third monitor so I need a strong Graphics card or cards which can handle the monitors. My only problem is that the monitors only have HDMI connectivity.
- Should I add way more RAM to handle all the above programs?

Thank you very much for your time and help!
J

It's hard to tell if it's the ram because we don't know what is open in all those tabs, and freezing tends to be more of a corrupt files or fragmented files issue. Have you run scans and defrags lately?

I do run scans and defrags frequently.

A component at a time I will go over your system and say what you can do to make it faster. Running what you are, I would say use a quad core processor, 16-36GB of RAM and a SSD, but that is me.

Mainboard : ASRock P55M Pro
Chipset : Intel P55
These are okay. If you want to build a new system use a Z77 from Gigabyte, MSI, EVGA, or Intel.
Processor : Intel Core i5 750 @ 2666 MHz
This is actually pretty good as is. It is only 2 generations back, and still a good performer. Try overclocking if you have the cooling for it.
Physical Memory : 12288 KB
Are you sure that is not MB? because you are saying you have 12 MB of RAM. Which is not even possible on a LGA1156 system. If it is MB, then you have 12GB, which is okayish. go to 16GB if you can and see if that helps.
Video Card : ATI Radeon HD 5670
This is fine, but if you want more monitors, then look for a HD6770 eyefinity 6 card, or you could go to a HD7850 and be good too. If your monitors are HDMI only, then you will need a active display port to DVI and 3 DVI to HDMI ports to get it all working. But it is fairly simple.

These are good. If you want a SSD go for it, but that is personal choice, and quite frankly I still can not defend the cost with the benefits.

everything else is basic stuff and will work fine.

If you want to upgrade your entire system, then go for a 3770k or 3570k and a LGA 1155 Z77 board with 16 or 32GB of RAM and you will be fine too.

Thank you for your quick reply!

Is it worth just getting a new mobo and some extra RAM (since Processor looks fine like you said, no idea about OC though) ? My main issue is the random freezes and the PC lagging which makes me go crazy..

The RAM it is indeed 12GB and not MB.. I will check out the Graphics cards you mentioned and I will look into the SSD prices and see if it worths it. From what I heard it does make a difference, I just hope it is viewable :)

My honest opinion is that SSDs are not worth it for desktop computers unless you are being paid by the second.

You will not need a new motherboard if you want to use your current processor. A new motherboard would mean a new processor too.

Ok great, thank you once again for the reply!

One last question. Should I check out for a bigger Fan/Cooler? This one is 520W.

say what? Fan coolers are not rated in watts. I think you mean the power supply. And that depends on age of the unit and the model of the unit.

Power Supply*** (4.30am atm over here -.-")

2 years old, CoolerMaster RS-520.

I am thinking maybe that this is too low, especially if I make some changes.

Can you also recommend me which HD 7850 should I go with because I can see: XFX, MSI, Club3D, Sapphire, Gigabyte, Asus, PowerColor for 1G and 2G models.

I would go for XFX because they are high quality and have the best RMA service in the industry.

520 should be fine, but if you want to upgrade go for a CX600 from corsair, or anything 600 watt or bigger from Antec, Corsair, Coolermaster (only certain ones), NZXT, OCZ, PC power and cooling, kingwin, Seasonic, Silverstone, or XFX.

I know the feeling about the time too. Its 2200 hours here, but I regularly stay up till 0300 or later.

since when, i normally hear XFX has a laughable RMA service, IIRC Voyagerfan had fun with them or something, but MSI is a very reliable brand, sapphire and gigabyte are good and XFX is good too overall for quality, and ASUS is alright but their support is terrible and many on this forum have put ASUS in the never recommend pile for how bad it is and their quality control has gone down over the past few years.

Well ok then, doesn't really matter much, even with a troublesome RMS their products are good and prices are low so would have recomended them anyways but with that said now they are better in my eyes so whatever.

My opinion is that the system is fine, i5 750, 12GB RAM, P55 board, it's quite a nice setup. You'd probably need a newer graphics card though if you wanted to use those extra monitors.

Thank you all once again for your replies :)

I just have a question, I was checking out my Task Manager and according to it I am usually using around 3-6GB of RAM but the CPU seems a bit high imho (no idea though) at around 30-40%.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thank you!

I'd run some malware scanners such as Malwarebytes, you may have something that is spiking your CPU.
