Windows 8 - Lots of Questions

Okay so a coworker of mine told me that updating to Windows 8 from Windows 7 Ultimate is only around 30 some dollars?

He also said that I should not upgrade but I should wipe and do a fresh install of windows 8.

I was going to stick with Windows 7 but if 8 is that cheap I might just go with it...

whats everyone else doing?

I'm keeping 7. Windows 8 UI sucks and it's not going to catch on well with anything that isn't a tablet.

So far I have not seen nor heard that. It may be able to, but either way, 7 is the last windows I will ever use. And it is only for games.

I'll go ahead and get the upgrade but I probably won't run Win 8 as my main OS, I'll stick with Win 7 for that.

I'm using the RP right now, soon as the UI screen comes up, I jump into the desktop right away. Hardly use the UI. Using it till I can afford 7 in December. They had said that if you have Windows xp sp3, vista or 7. The price for 39.99 till Jan 31, 2013. I doubt I can get it, my lic key is for Windows xp pro x64.

xp x64! That os didn't support any of my drivers. My coworker says it will be 30 dollars for you too. They are trying to get people to move to 8 from XP

Not another Windows 8 thread surely? ;)

I'm most likely just going to stick to Windows 7.

I heard you can turn that start screen off though.. right?

Nope. There's no way to turn it off. You're stuck with it.

I'm personally going to get one of my spare HDDs and install 8 on that, and then force myself to use it until I find something so terrible about it that forces me to move back to 7. I have all my files and games on a second HDD so it should be pretty simple with no risks.

Right now, there's a lot I like about it, and a lot to get used to about it. Other people may have set their opinions in stone after freaking out over the new UI, but I'm going to give it a chance.

And wow, another thread about Windows 8. Major freakout mode activated.

Don't go and buy something just because it's cheap. Buy something if need it and/or get some performance improvement.
IMO you get neither with 8. Save your money.

i'm sticking with 7 too, until i see a lot's of posts with positive remarks about 8- and then a clean install with new key, i've had problems with upgrade keys
when sys crashes- microsoft sorted out with a new key but it was a big hassle

You can install the Start Button and use Win 8 like Win 7, but even then its awkward and annoying. I wouldn't bother upgrading from Win 7.

I tried 8 Consumer Preview for three weeks. For me, the raft of GUI headaches and disadvantages and "gotchas!" far outweighed any performance improvements. I didn't notice any. Do you have some examples?

Boot times are drastically decreased for one, and it's lighter on RAM usage.

Yeah. Those third party Start Menus and themes and stuff were never any good really. :/
