How would you upgrade my system

Since many years I use my desktop computer with the following components:

3.2 Gigahertz AMD Athon 64 Dual Core
4 GB memory
Motherboard : Asutek M2N 32-SLI Deluxe 1.XX
650 watts power supply
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX

As I am getting more and more involved in games ( especially FlightSimulator )
I feel it is time to upgrade.But the question is how ?

First: how would you judge my system
Sec: how would you upgrade ?

I am considering a quad core CPU.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I plan to spend about 600 to 800 $.

With that kind of money you could just get a new board/CPU/RAM and graphics card. Which 650W PSU do you have?

That is what I actually meant,namely to buy a new board,CPU and Graphic
card.
The question is what and would it improve over what I am using now.
 
If I'm right, you have a 6400+ right?
oooh, I would want to test that buddy ;P

Now serious, you could get alot better with the budget you considered.

Go for an i3, a Z77 board, 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, and then see how much money you have left over for a new GPU and PSU.

Not suggesting you should upgrade to an i3 and the rest of it first, just want to see how much it'll cost you. Have a look on Newegg.

2 x 4GB DDR3 1600
Z77 mobo
7870/ GTx 660
(optional) SSD
You may need new windows if you are running OEM. MS is releasing W8. I don't know if you consider that.
