Questionable Folders.

As illustrated in the attached screen shot, there are four folders showing in a section of my external hard drive. Of the four, the ones which are giving me issues are the 1st, 3rd and (particularly) the 4th one. I don't know why there is a (shown) lock on the 1st and the 3rd one. The 4th one will not let me gain admissions, no matter WHAT I try to do. I would really like to delete these folders from my ext. hard drive, and think that they may have something to do with previous system backups.

How can I delete them?

Format the drive.

Yes, I had already considered that. But I had hoped that there might be another way to deal with those folders. I have no problem formatting that drive, as soon as I am able to get another to copy important files from this present ext. hard drive. Not enough room on my internal (smaller) drive by which to house them.

Thanks anyway.

They're just misc. stuff left over from Windows updates. Take ownership of the folders (Right click one folder>Properties>Security>Advanced>Owner>Edit>Click your user, check the box that says "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects, click apply, okay, okay, okay) and then you can delete them. You'll have to take ownership of all folders you want to delete though.

Thank you.

Following your lead (instructions), I was indeed able to delete those three folders of concern. However, there was another one (Nero Auto Backup) which gave me quite a battle. In fact, I still haven't conquered that one yet. What I don't understand is that this particular folder has reported to have a size of 2.23TB - when the size of my ext. hard drive is just 1TB, with 132GB's free.

I have changed permissions on this folder, but when I attempt to delete it I get an error message (attached) which jumps up each time I reach the 45.2GB deletion progress amount. I no longer have Nero on my system, and wonder it that program would be needed by which to rid myself of that folder.
