Quad core to single core motherboard

Hello.

I was wondering whether it would be possible to fit a AMD quad cpu into a AMD single core computer. I am looking to upgrade a AMD PC so I can use it as a gaming machine.

Thank You. :)

It depends on what motherboard you got. But I doubt it, because most single cores are just coupled with old mobo's.

Most single-core AMDs were Socket 754 or 939 or older. Those are old sockets and there are no quad-cores for either, so I'd say the answer is probably no I'm afraid. :(

Have no idea what board this dude has, but AMD made single core AM2 and AM3 processors. Would need the model of the computer or motherboard.

That's true but most likely he has an older AMD single-core. I think the Sempron is the only AM2/AM3 single-core isn't it?

But maybe he has an athlon 64, then he can upgrade to a dual core. The athlon 64 X2 6400+ is ok, but not for heavy games.

Hello again.

If its not possible to upgrade a AMD single core to a quad, do you think a AMD dual core could be upgraded using a AMD quad cpu. I'm just trying to find a way of making up a reasonable quad core on a budget, at the moment i'm unable to afford a new quad which could be anywhere between £200 and £300+.

Thanks again by the way :) :good:

It would be much easier to answer your questions if we knew what type of brand and model of computer you have or model of motherboard you have.

What i was thinking about was buying a cheap AMD dual core tower and then upgrading it with quad core CPU, AMD of course :) I have also got to do this on a budget of maybe £90, it could be possible to do.

I have not got the dual core AMD yet so im afraid i cannot tell you. I was just wondering whether a dual core AMD could be upgraded to quad core AMD.

AMD do have budget quad-cores. The Athlon II X4s, Phenom II X4s and FX-4100s are all under £200, and you could get a motherboard and possibly some RAM in that budget too.

CPU http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/processors/amdphenomx4/hdz965fbgmbox.html £80

Board http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/motherboards/amdam3plus970chipset/970a-g46.html £65

RAM http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/memory-pc/ddr3-pc3-12800/1600mhz/cml8gx3m2a1600c9.html £35

Total £179.96

I would go with a fx4300, better overall and gaming.

Hello jonny.

I would n't worry :P its a really old machine ive had it for a long time. Its been lying around i just wondered whether i could upgrade it. I don't know the actual specs to it but i know its an old type ive had it for years. I might just use it for spare parts or give it away for free to someone who just wants access to the internet. At the moment the machine im using at this time is a dual core intel celeron 1.6 Ghz cpu, 2GB Ram. This one is 4 or 5 times faster than the one ive been enquiring about so that might give you an idea of what its like :P

So you can't give us the model number of the pc or what motherboard is installed in it so we can determine what processors it supports?

Hi john.

No im afraid i can't at the moment for one thing i can't to it, its under a load of stuff. Like i said its been lying around for years gathering dust. When i originaly got it i only used it for the internet and may be a few old games, i never new much about computers at the time and never really took much notice of the system specs. I also have an old pentium 4 lying around somewhere but i think thats intel :(
