XP vs 7 vs 8 (performance)

So i was talking to a certain individual who has an age and also experience in the field and he said that a 1.1 GHz PC ran better on windows 7 than it did on XP. He also mentioned that windows 8 is smaller, and more efficient for that matter(yes i know it is intended for tablets and so, so i am not interested in any opinions on the completely different UI and the effect on the users comfort). Does anyone know more about this matter?

Windows XP will run faster on older hardware (6 years or older).

Windows 7 will run faster on newer hardware

Windows 8 will run faster than windows 7 on the same hardware

For example, if you have an Athlon XP 2600 and 1gb of ram windows XP will run faster.

If you have an i7 with 4gb of ram windows 7 will run faster, and windows 8 faster yet.

The newer windows can take advantage of todays higher end hardware, where windows XP wasn't designed or optimized for the newer more powerful hardware because it didn't exist yet.

Well, i figured newer versions must also be built to run more efficiently, so maybe without the eye candy that could actually happen. Couldn't it?

Windows 8 is designed to run on the underpowered Tablets that are about 1ghz. The main problem with installing on a 10 year old motherboard will be the lack of Drivers. I tried installing 8 on a msi motherboard from the year 2000. It had a 1.2 Ghz CPU, but the onboard Lan Cards, Sound cards didn't work and the onboard Video Card didn't have the resolution that 8 needs to display correctly.

I could have screwed around with putting in a better AGP Vid Card, and found PCI Sound, and Lan Cards, but the Motherboard had a Limit of 512MB SDram so I decided I didn't really want to fuss around that much more with it.

Eye candy doesn't do squat to performance. It's entirely dependent on your gpu, not your cpu. If your gpu is so lacking that it can't render aero smoothly than it will appear 'laggy', but the actual loading of the applications and such is not impacted.

Exactly.

I wonder how good Windows will be in the next 10 years :P
I read somewhere that Microsoft will extend support for XP all until 2020.

XP support ends in april of 2013 thank god. Want to stop testing on that archaic piece of crap. Performance between Win7 and Win8 is going to be marginal. Not enough to really worry about.

I remember watching a video a few years back of a guy who was running Windows 95 or 98 on a modern 2 Ghz P4 CPU or maybe it was newer cpu then that I cannot remember I just know that it was not suppose to run on that cpu but anyway that thing booted in about 5 seconds and open programs instantly, the issue was the man must have put a lot of work into it to get it to run.

Sure if you take XP and run it on modern hardware it would be faster but here is the thing, it will not run on hardware by itself being not to many hardware or even software manufactures support it anymore. So I bet my Windows 8 laptop would eat any xp laptop just due to newer hardware and drivers.

Plus I would like to mention the fact that XP security is horrible in comparison to modern Windows operating systems, the look is dated which for some is not a problem for some but it is for me and as mentioned will be losing support soon which I cannot wait so maybe it can be left to rest, XP is like a person who should have died years ago but has been left on life support because people cannot let go. Not meant to offend anyone.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! (very dramatically) But but, i like xp. Well, 7 is pretty cool. Well, i actually have an old computer.

I might sound weird, but every software I make,I make it on the way so that it works on Windows 98 and later.Because not everyone use Windows 8.There are still MANY people who use Windows 2000 and Windows XP.Some even use Windows 98 and Windows ME.Many of them use Windows 7 and 8,but many also do not.So the more compatible my software is,more times I will sell it and more money I will earn ;)

It's kinda stupid that people stop using a specific OS only for one reason:

"Microsoft does not support it."

Of course that is not always the only reason, but in many cases many people stop using a specific OS only for that reason.

So if Microsoft will stop supporting XP in 2014.,that absolutely does not mean anything to me.Because OS does not automatically become unusable if Microsoft does not support it anymore.

Cheers!

I consider XP legacy software. I have to test on it and its annoying to set up in comparison to vista or 7 or even 8, those OS's set themselves up.

And nothing means anything to you, so why am I even arguing this...you don't care about software support... hell you believe that patches are bad... do you have a beard? a long one?

What I have noticed so far, is that Windows XP is quite a bit slower then 7 on a newer PC, but Windows 8 is a tiny bit slower then Windows 7.

Most software developed today that is worth anything would not run on the hardware in Windows 98, so I am just curious what software do you make? People upgrade for new features, a more polished look and faster system.

Wolfe, are you using a core 2 solo? When I use a Core 2 Duo or above, just opening steam takes shorter on a W7 machine over XP.And DMGrier, thats not true at all.Plenty of good software can run on windows 98, unless your gaming of course, because of the old graphics drivers.7zip is a fantastic program which would run fine on 98.
