How would this major Intel news affect you?

Saw it a few days back, not too happy but then again, I rarely just upgrade my CPU, I generally get both and upgrade both later, so whilst very annoying because it gets rid of that option, you can still build your own system.

The desktop won't come to an end any time soon, so saying "the end is coming" is completely wrong.

Oh man, that will be annoying if you ever need to replace either the motherboard or CPU.

Another Intel power grab. Lets hops AMD catches them in IPC by then and doesnt go PGA. AMD hasnt even went to LGA on the desktop yet. From what I understand they are not even going to in the next few generations either.

Doesn't really affect the common user, but will mostly affect the motherboard manufacturers, AMD will have an advantage over here, but this is just a theory.

I don't think that will ever happen as if it does, Intel will lose lots of money. I can see it happening for a laptop but not a desktop.

AMD thought they had one up on Intel. AMD released that they were sticking with sockets because they valued the custom builders. Then Intel comes out and says its not true, they are sticking with sockets. Back and forth is a good thing, lol

The original rumor started off by saying that it would be BGA for the mainstream units, and LGA for the "performance" chips. the arguments there started when trying to figure if that was Z/H vs X, or i5 vs i7.

Either way, if it happened or not does not matter. it just makes it easier to say "get what you need now" and make it that much easier to build a crap motherboard.

I can see it going that way for basic prebuilts but the gaming and enthusiast market has a lot of money in it and I don't think they would just toss that away.

Here's my take on this. The ZDNet article indicated up to five independent sources for its news release which is more than a rumor to me. What I think is going on is that Intel was seriously considering the switch and floated a trial balloon to test the waters before committing to a switch leading to what was reported in the second article, something I'll keep in mind for the future.

I did not read this article, mainly as it is no less than the 4th one I have seen and am tired of reading them. But just because someone has sources don't mean they are telling the truth. I could very well give you 7 sources that a 6970 could run on a no name 400 watt PSU, don't make it true, now does it. Also would not help if the sources are unreliable, like using say Ford as a source for Dodge info, vs say Car and Driver or Motortrend.

Not true, intel would be making the same amount of money in the end really and when they can become the only source for the mobos too they actually will get more profits, then they can just offer a couple with additional pci-e lanes, really it is a more profitable thing for them, especially when anyone that wants to upgrade has to buy both from them again which will further increase their profits

Just looked up what LGA and PGA are and wouldn't they be PGA now (from what i read)? and what's the advantage of LGA?

Also, pretty sure i remember reading or at least seeing rumors that AMD might be moving out of the performance processor market after steamroller since they aren't really keeping up and they make more from the APUs desktops and laptops

I think he was meaning BGA in that first sentence.

The advantage of LGA is it is easier to avoid bending pins, and maybe a few others. The main one being more rugged.
