GTX 480 1.5gb vs a 7850 2gb? Which card would give more fps in games like crysis 2? and generally speaking, which card is more powerful? I don't care about power consumption and stuff like that...:D

From what I understand the 7850 is going to be a tiny bit faster. In some cases the 480 might win out a bit though. I'd say go with the 7850 as it's newer and more efficient technology. No point in getting an older card when you can get a newer one with the same or similar performance at the same or lesser of a price.

No point in getting an older card? Here is what I think: Even if the 7850 2gb is let's say 5% faster than the gtx 480 1.5gb, its about $30 more expensive. Secondly, I like to play around in programs like Blender 3D or unity, so the cuda cores in the gtx 480 might help me. And finally even if the hd 7850 is 5% more powerful, its more expensive, newer, and hence it will decrease in price more slowly than the gtx 480. So, in conclusion, considering that I'm not a gamer the gtx 480 might be a better choice for me because of its price, cuda cores, and the fact that its cheaper, so if I'll need more power I can always buy another one for a relatively low price.

If you think that what was the point in asking the question in the first place. You also said higher FPS in GAMES like Crysis. So I assumed you wanted it for gaming. Where are you finding these prices on a a 480? If you're not gaming as you say and wanting the nVidia tech that the 480 has then go for that? Not sure why you asked for help if you already clearly know which one you want.

I thought there would be a big difference in performance, and you said that there is a tiny difference, that's why I changed my mind. And I said higher fps in games like crysis 2 from pure curiosity, not because it matters to me. Anyways, thanks for the responses! :) Oh, and the prices are from e-bay...

7850 will run cooler, be more power efficient and have double the V-RAM. No brainer for me. For gaming I'd choose the 7850.

But if you want CUDA, then it's got to be an NVIDIA card. If you get a good deal on 480, then it's a decent choice.

I think I'll go for the gtx 480 because of the CUDA cores, but I might take a closer look at the 7850 first. What is the V-RAM?

Just how much RAM is on the card. Most 7850's have 2GB (although there is a 1GB model).

I agree though, if you want the CUDA technology, get the 480.

It's just the RAM on the video card itself. Generally, the more there is, the better the card is at playing games at higher resolutions. That's why I recommend 2GB cards over 1GB.

You might also want to take a look into the GTX 570. It's newer, runs cooler and has slightly more RAM than the 480 does. I think performance is about equal IIRC. Or you could look into the 580, which is faster than the 570 and the 480.

I'd go for a GTX660 over a 480 cuz your energy bill will be several dollars a month less, you'll get the price difference back in like a year

Hmmmm, I don't have to pay the bills yet (still have a few years left :D). The gtx 660 is way more expensive than the gtx 480 and absolutely terrible in terms of price/performance. I think I'll get the gtx 480 because I red on other websites that it performs much better than the hd 7850 in programs like Blender 3D, because of the CUDA cores. In terms of V-RAM it has 512mb less than the 7850, which is acceptable to me. It also has 384bit memory, but I don't know if it affects the performance in any ways. The gtx 570 also looks interesting, but I believe it only comes with 1280mb of memory, which is a little less...

Last question remaining about the gtx 480 is, can I overclock it, or not really?

It's not the greatest overclocker, I can't remember how far I was able to push mine, I think it was about 77 mhz above stock without increasing the voltages. I had the Gelid aftermarket cooler on mine, it brought the temps down by about 20 degrees and was whisper quite which allowed for a little more headroom for overclocking. It was this one: http://www.gelidsolutions.com/products/index.php?lid=1&cid=17&id=52 The stock cooler is loud and not the greatest, just to let you know.

Stock cooler loud? I'm pretty sure nothing can be louder than my gts 250 which is louder than a lawnmower :D

the gtx260 should definitely be louder than the gts250, and from these benches, at full load, the 480 is nearly 13db louder than the 260. And every 3db is supposed to double the loudness. Although it depends on the cooler too, my 470 is pretty quiet and runs pretty cool (although it has a special cooler and uses case fans strapped to it), and my cpu fan is a good bit louder

The gtx480 isn't great for overclocking, they run really hot (even with more advanced cooling) and you'll need to add more voltage for only small oc.
In opposite of that, the hd7850 is a GREAT overclocker.

The 570 has 1.25GB, and I believe most 480s have 1GB, unless you've found a 1.5GB card. Not sure if they made those or not.
